Tremendous Life and Career Success Advice

I always enjoy books that make you think. "Advice My Parents Gave Me and Other Lessons I Learned from My Mistakes" by Rodolfo Costa is one of those kinds of books. It is filled with valuable life and career success wisdom distilled into bite sized chunks.

Rodolfo describes the book as "409 thoughts, quotes, lessons, ideas, suggestions, reminders, words of advice and encouragement to lead a successful, rewarding, peaceful, happy and fulfilling life." And he is right on. The 409 snippets in this book will make you think.

I send a motivational quote to my subscribers every day. If you're not receiving these quotes you can go to [...] and sign up in the space immediately below the image of my career advice book, Success Tweets. I preface each quote with the words: "THINK, ACT, SUCCEED." I believe that it's important to read inspirational advice. But I think it's more important to think about what you read and to ask yourself, "How does this apply to me?" Then it's important to take action - to do something with what you read.

Let me sum up. There are three easy things that you can do every day to help you in your career success journey...

1. Read - anything that can help you create your career success.
2. Think - about how you can apply the lessons of what you've read in your life.

Life is wonderful. Life is horrible. Life is fabulous. Life is terrible. Life is great. Life is awful. Life is challenging. Life is a piece of cake. Life is unfair. Life is beautiful. Life is ugly. Life is tough. Life is easy. In reality, life is whatever you make it.

Remember the word "failure" is just a state of mind. Approach it with a positive attitude and you will notice that failure can become a learning experience toward your success.

Always keep your promises and honor your commitments. Give your word and carry it through - even if it is difficult, expensive or inconvenient.

Visualize yourself as the person you want to be, act like the person you want to be, and strive to become the person you want to become.

Establish goals for yourself, no matter how big, crazy or unattainable they may see. Who are you not to achieve them and be successful? Who are you not to be the person you want to be? Believe in yourself.

It may take a little time to get where you want to be, but if you pause and think for a moment, you will notice that you are no longer where you were. Don't stop - keep going.

Don't be embarrassed to say "I don't know." It's amazing how much you can learn just by admitting that.

Keep your mind open. Let your thoughts wander and allow your brain and subconscious mind point you in the direction of the answer you are seeking.

Honesty, sincerity, respect, integrity and reliability built trust and hold relationships together.

Erase the word "someday" from your vocabulary. Don't save things for special occasions. Every day is special. Every day is a gift that we must appreciate and be thankful for. Wear your attractive clothes, and your nice perfume. Use your fine silverware and dishes. Drink from your expensive crystal glasses - just because. Live every day to the fullest and savor every minute of every day.

There is a common sense point here. Successful people seek out inspiration and life and career success advice. Excellent book that delivers practical, thought provoking ideas filled with positive attitude and encouragement for a better life.

I liked and enjoy this book, very much, from beginning to end. Part of the book's message is not to dwell on the negative aspects of our lives. We live with fears and worries, that rob us from living life to the fullest. By recognizing this fact we can learn to be more in touch with our thoughts and feelings so we can have a more positive and encouraging way of life and Rodolfo shares these, ideas and words of advice in a clear and succinct way.

409 Self Development tips all in one place

'Advice My Parents Gave Me and Other Lessons I Learned From My Mistakes' by Rodolfo Costa is a self development book with a difference. Most self and personal development books, at first impression, seem to tell you what to do with your life. This book is fun. As discussed in this self development book review, it gives you tips, advice, etc., based on a wealth of experience, yet you feel free to use the information as you wish.

On the front cover Rodolfo Costa adds: '409 thoughts, quotes, lessons, ideas, suggestions, reminders, words of advice and encouragement to lead a successful, rewarding, peaceful, happy, and fulfilling life'. This is indeed what he covers. He also shows you how to look on the problems and setbacks in your life as assets that help to create your character and to constantly self develop and grow as a person.

WHAT IT COVERS

It is a short book of 135 pages divided into 16 chapters. Each chapter concentrates on a specific subject, e.g., 'Self-doubt, fear and criticism', 'Money' and 'Children'. The chapters then list tips around the subject with chapters being interspersed with quotes from people such as Abraham Lincoln, Bette Davis, Charles Kingsley, Cicero, Mark Twain, Michael Jordan, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Steve Jobs, Voltaire and many others.

The inspirational tips can be used at any point in your life. You will find some to be quite thought provoking. Each self development tip is, in essence, a bullet point comprising one or two succinct sentences. This makes them easy to dip into and put into practice. Many of the tips are quite deep and meaningful. Some my favourites are:

* Always be humble, but do not apologize for your success.
* Always have honest and open communication with others.
* Be accountable and you will get the respect and trust of others.
* Do not get so busy making a living that you forget to create a life.
* Let your children have their own thoughts - do not try to make them like you.
* Do not spend more time planning your wedding than you spend planning your marriage.
* Do not live your life imagining and creating tragedies in your mind that will probably never take place.
* Be honest, loyal and fair even if it is not to your advantage. Never compromise your personal integrity.
* You may have a wrinkled face as you grow older, and that is fine, but if you lose your enthusiasm for life, you will end up with a wrinkled soul.

You may well have come across some of the tips and advice before, or from your own experience. The main asset of this little book is that it gives you 409 self development tips all in one place. The tips are also practical, being things that you can implement straight away.

Good for some purposes

I had hoped for a text on plant and animal biomechanics which would be a bit more engineering-focused than the old book of Wainwright et al. (Mechanical design in organisms) or the Vogel and Alexander books. Ennos' book spends most of the time summarizing polymer properties and basic mechanics of solids with some biological examples. The mathematics is quite elementary. Plants predominate, which makes sense given Ennos' background.

As a text for a mechanics course for biologists, this could work. If you want a biomechanics text for engineers, to follow an introductory materials course and a mechanics course, this is not it.

As a monograph on mechanics of biological materials, Wainwright et al. may still be best. I have still not found a human biomechanics book that I really like.

Two thumbs up! Lots of things to enjoy in this story!

Well, I can definitely say that this story was one HEL* of a ride. *Bad pun intended!* I have to admit that when I was asked to read and review this, I was slightly hesitant. I'm not typically keen on heavy religiously themed stories, but honestly, the blurb and the way the author described it won me over. Especially when I started thinking that it sounded vaguely similar, with the modern day comedic based religious theme, to one of my favorite movies...Dogma.

So yeah, that solidified it for me.
I went for it, and honestly I am glad I did. The hilarious plot line of a tattooed, orange haired, trucker mouthed, lesbian being the second coming, and the big G and his disciples being the heads of a huge corporation, and Judas as the ultimate anti-hero, I loved every second of all of that!

Even with the comedic awesomeness aside, the characters were compelling, the action scenes were engaging, and the visuals that the author painted were extremely vivid, whether it was the urban setting, an exceedingly grotesque foe, or even a steamy little romp. Monroe seriously knows how to tell a story. The sarcasm, and medium use of profanity were just extra little perks, like the yummy cherry on top of a hot fudge sundae.

I also appreciated that you didn't have to be well versed in the bible to get a lot of what was going on and who key players were. I would say that even a person with very little biblical knowledge would easily be able to follow along and recognize most, if not all the big names.

Hilarious Satire I Highly Recommend!

"You people would give Lucifer’s hordes a run for their money. You all hate each other and come up with new reasons every day to stoke that fire."

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this one. I'm not always a fan of books that deal with religion because they come across as too preachy, but this one had such a good blend of snark and sarcasm that it was hard not to enjoy it. I liked that there was obviously more at play than what both Rain and Jude knew, but I would have liked just a teensy bit more for it to be fully developed.

I thought that there were times that the story moved too quickly compared to how the rest of the novel went along. As well, there were times I was a tad confused about how we got from Point A to Point B, but because of my intimate knowledge with the End of Days (thanks Supernatural!), I was able to figure it out.

I would have liked a bit more time spent on the actual Apocalypse portion of the novel and maybe just a bit more about what Lucifer's role was and how it was all orchestrated. As well, I felt like some of the characters that were introduced later in the book, the Four Horsemen, were kind of wasted. They had SO MUCH POTENTIAL and then were barely in the story. Otherwise, there wasn't much to complain about with this one.

I highly recommend this one if you're looking for a fun and quirky end of times read with a cool lesbian heroine.

The End of the World as We Know It

I absolutely love this book. Please let me qualify this statement by saying that although there have been many books that I have loved, I almost never use this love as an opening statement.

The Trinity Corporation has a problem. It's losing followers. G (the Boss) believes that his message has been perverted over time and that it is crucial to get someone down there to implement a new plan for gathering the masses back into the Fold. G has already picked the lucky people to carry this message- a lesbian named Rainfall on the Desert Plains Johnson (who calls herself Rain because, well...look at her name) and Jude, a guy sent back to act as her recruiter/public relations manager/wrangler. And when Rain is told she is to be the new Lamb of God, she is going to need all of the wrangling that Jude can come up with.

Rain is a delightful character. She is funny, hard working (mostly), and appears to have an eagle eye for bull$#!&. And when Jude convinces her to take a meeting at a local Dunkin' Donuts and informs her that she is "the embodiment of the Second coming of Christ. The Messiah", her meter is understandably hitting its outer limits. Then Jude looks at the empty bagel case and casually tells her to multiply the bagels. Having only taken the meeting because she was afraid Jude might be a member of the mob (although she has no clue as to why the mob would even know her name), Rain is now sure that she has stepped into something that is a whole new level of crazy. That is, until she decides to mollify the looney guy by doing what he asks- and it works. All of the sudden there are full trays of bagels- and Rain has a much bigger problem than either the mob or a deluded, bad smelling homeless looking guy on her hands. Because the Second Coming of Christ has always been inextricably linked to, yes, you guessed it, the Apocalypse.

As Jude tries to get Rain to perform miracles, he is confronted with the numerous ways things have changed down here in the last two thousand plus years. When he has her change water into wine in a local homeless kitchen, there are some hilarious, and disastrous, results. In addition to trying to figure out how to get Rain moving in the right direction, there is the big question. This being that if Rain is the Messiah, who is the Antichrist? Because as sure as rainbows follow a storm, Good is going to be confronted with Evil.

This is a hilarious but thought provoking book. It's the story of an everyday person suddenly confronted with a situation that she has absolutely no reference for. Thoughts of God, faith and deep contemplation of what our role is here on Earth and with our fellow humans has taken a backseat to working for a living, trying to keep a relationship from tanking and how to not get stuck with tables full of poor tippers. In other words, us.

I would imagine that the first reaction that some may have to the idea of this book will be that it is somewhat, or totally, blasphemous. I would strongly disagree. Yes, this isn't the step-by-step story told to us, but it IS a strong story of G's belief in love (although it isn't always an easy love) for us, and Redemption. The goal of bringing the masses back into the Fold starts with a woman who has never read the Bible and doesn't believe in God. When she purchases one and begins to read it, she wonders, quite understandably, if there isn't a CliffsNotes version somewhere to help her through it. When Rain finds out that her job is to bring about the End, she certainly can be forgiven for having a healthy dose of "why me?". As she tries to navigate her way through G's Plan and today's society, events are spinning out of all control. But in the end there IS a Plan, and we mortals are not always going to be privy to what it is- and if we don't start out believing, then G is just the person to show us the way.

French Wines -- An Overview For The Beginner

Clive Coates is a gifted writer, who has extensive knowledge and experience as a wine critic. Mr. Coates attempts to cover all the major wine growing regions of France: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire Valley, Rhone River Valley, Alsace, Provence and Languedoc. He writes about lesser known appellations and informs the reader about the better growers in each appellation.
This book, "The Wines of France," falls well short of the other scholarly writings of Mr. Coates, e.g., "Cote D'Or, A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy," or "Grand Vins, The Finest Chateaux of Bordeaux and Their Wine." This recent effort could be well suited for those who are interested in a broad overview of French wines. However, one should not expect the same level of schorlarly achievement as reflected in his prior works.

Beautiful Binding and New Examples - Good Update to a Modern Classic

This was the book I learned electromagnetics and computational electromagnetics from, so I was very excited to hear that a second edition was in the works. I purchased my copy as soon as it became available.
The second edition is an incremental improvement over the excellent previous edition of this book. The first thing you will notice is that the entire book is printed in color on glossy paper. This is a significant improvement over the first edition as the book is much more pleasant to hold and a pleasure to flip through.
In terms of content, many worked example problems are now inserted in the electromagnetic theory chapters, which comprises the first half of the book. These include both trivial problems to demonstrate the concept being discussed, as well as more involved problems that demonstrates problem solving techniques to readers who may be learning electromagnetics theory on their own by reading this book. This new additional material makes the book a much more useful independent learning source whereas the first edition was designed more as a textbook that is to be read in conjunction of going to lectures and doing homework problems.
The real bonus of this book when compared with other graduate engineering electromagnetic textbooks (Balanis, Harrington, etc) is the second half of the book, which provides an up-to-date and in-depth discussion of computational electromagnetic techniques. The presentation of Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method for computational EM is so simple and clear, that my undergraduate students have been able to produce their own FDTD code based purely on reading this chapter. The author is the world-leading expert on Finite Element Method (FEM) and the chapter on FEM provides a very in-depth discussion of the state-of-the-art of this technique. It is easier to read than the author's monograph on the subject. The chapters on Method of Moments (MoM) and hybrid techniques completes the second half of the book, and prepares the reader to be able to understand and appreciate the latest research papers on computational electromagnetics.
This second edition is a good update to a modern classic, and I strongly encourage everyone who wants to familiarize themselves with graduate-level engineering electromagnetics and computational electromagnetics to consider this book as a learning resource.

I have to say I'm glad this update comes in

This book is a recent update of its first edition, which has been used in University of Illinois as the textbook for a series of graduate EM courses in the ECE department. As a student at U of I, I took both courses with the first edition, but bought this second edition at its very first debut. I have to say I'm glad this update comes in. Here are some of my thoughts: spoiler alert, it's a great book.

Aside from contents commonly covered in other classic EM textbooks, this book dedicates a significant portion of its content (the second half) to an introductory survey on computational electromagnetics, which includes the most popular CEM methods. The theoretical part starts from the very basics in EM and gradually progress to some of the advanced topics like wave transformation and addition theorem. The coverage of these advanced topics are excentlly chosen in a sense that: a) they are useful and rather basic ideas for the CEM part of the book; b) they provide a decent foundation from which the readers can progress to more advanced EM monographs.

For this second edition, the most significant change is the addition of Examples. These examples are either basic ones that show you the problem solving process in graduate level EM, or are rather complicated ones that extend and deepen the topics covered in the first edition. In short, I believe working out these examples is a great exercise if you want to excel at your course, or are simply interested in EM.

Last but not least, the paper is of great quality and the figures are nice and beautiful. A well printed, well bound book.

Most Useful and Beautiful Textbook in EM and CEM

The 2nd edition of Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic fields is the most useful textbook I have ever seen. It systematically discusses the fundamentals as well as some advanced topics in both electromagnetic theory and numerical methods in electromagnetics. In the theory part, it starts from the overview of Maxwell's equation and review of vector analysis, and then discusses the specific topics in detail such as electromagnetic theorems and principles, wave radiation, scattering, and propagation in free space and three coordinate systems. Compared with electromagnetic knowledge covered by electrodynamics books, this book not only helps you build up a solid fundamental in electromagnetic theory, but also leads you to solve very practical problems using the theory. In the numerical method part, it introduces three most popular numerical methods (FDTD, FEM, and MoM), the hybrid methods, and fast algorithms. It covers all the classic methods a beginner should know in computational electromagnetics. All the derivations are very clear and detailed!

This book is also a very beautiful book. The whole book is made of high-quality papers with color pictures. The feel of reading this book is like reading a high-quality magazine! It is very enjoyable to hold this book on hands and read all the materials.

Richly detailed overview of modern evolutionary thought

I have used all three earlier editions of this text for my undergraduate 'Evolution' course (I am a college Professor of Biology) and have witnessed the various changes made over the years. The new version has updated much of the information on molecular evolution; the authors should be commended for their very thorough literature review. With the veritable explosion of research into evolutionary phenomena, this must be difficult indeed! The initial chapter on HIV still remains a wonderful introduction to your typically "human oriented" undergraduate and serves to generate interest in the topic early on. The phlogeny/evolutionary tree chapter was moved earlier to the "Introduction" part of the text; not sure why this was done. It was also nice to finally see mention made of reaction norms in the 'Adaptation' chapter (at last!), but there are still no examples of phenotypic plasticity from the vast botanical literature. The 'Evolution and Human Health' chapter is excellent for the medical student. Rather oddly, the important topic of speciation is near the book's end (Chapter 16) and glosses over the many fine examples from the plant evolution literature (polyploid speciation is virtually ignored, except for two paragraphs on p.159). My students are fascinated by the 'evolution of wheat' story, but don't look for that example of speciation here.

My primary complaint with this, and the preceding editions, is still the overwhelming amount of extraneous detail. How I wish I could use my editorial hand on this one! Does an undergraduate student really need over 20 pages on linkage disequilibrium? Are the final details of QTL mapping really necessary at this level of student education? Do we really need 4 pages on the 'fallacy' of the bell-curve (interesting advanced topic, but...) Also, there is an over abundance on phylogeny and systematics (useful for the future molecular systematist, but probably just confusing to the general biology major).

In any event, a great book, a little overwhelming, but well written and free of errors...I'll probably order the lastest (4th) edition anyway for the next 'Evolution' class...

Top notch evolution text for the undergraduate student

EVOLUTIONARY ANALYSIS (2nd ed) by Freeman and Herron hits the mark for an evolution text for the undergarduate student. It's not so thick that it's intimidating, but the contents cover the basics of evolutionary biology without being watered down.
The authors address topics of current interest (e.g., the evolution of HIV in Chapter 1) in drawing the student into the conversation about what evolution is, how it happens, and how you can demonstrate that it is happening.
Major sections of the book include the following:
1) An introduction to evolution: the HIV story, evidence for evolution, natural selection...
2) Mechanisms of evolutionary change: mutation, genetic drift, genetics, etc...
3) Adaptation: sexual selection, kin selection, social behavior, life history factors...
4) The History of Life: mechanisms of speciation, reconstructing evolutionary trees, origins and evolution of life through human evolution...
5) Current Research in Evolutionary Biology: development and evolution (a field that's really gaining momentum these days), molecular evolution, evolution and human health...
The authors touch all the important bases in this introductory text on evolution. The organization of material is logical, the tone is professional without being overbearing, there are many understandable examples, and the illustrations are excellent. Because of those factors, this new book appears to be a great text to teach from. There are wonderful reference texts out there about evolution, but most of them are not easy to teach or learn from. This book, however, helps students to learn, and provides ample material for instructors to use.
This is now my top choice for a textbook in evolution. This book is definitely worth 5 stars!

Worth the price

Looking at the price of this book you might precieve it as a bit expensive but don't be decieved. If you are taking an evolution course or just want to know about evolution, this is the easiest and most comprehensive read you can get. It has comprehensive chapters with page and chapter summeries and loads of examples. It made my course more enjoyable having it. If you're taking a course with this book, buy it. If you're taking another evolution course that deals with many concepts of evolution and even touches on the mathematics of genetics.....buy the book and read it.
