The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality, by Walter Benn Michaels

"A withering examination of how the celebration of cultural and ethnic difference obscures our yawning economic divide . . . This is a refreshing, angry, and important book." ―The Atlantic Monthly

Acclaimed as "eloquent" (Chicago Tribune), "cogent" (The New Yorker), and "impossible to disagree with" (The Washington Post); excoriated as a "wildly implausible" product of "the ‘shock and awe' school of political argument" (Slate), The Trouble with Diversity argues that our enthusiastic celebration of "difference" masks our neglect of the difference that really matters―the one between rich and poor. A magnificent skewer of pieties, Walter Benn Michaels takes on the many manifestations of our devotion―from affirmative action, to the worship of multiculturalism, to the obsession with heritage and identity―demonstrating that diversity offers a false vision of social justice, one that conveniently costs us nothing. In a daring break with both the left and the right, he calls for less attention to the illusory distinction of culture and more attention to the real discrepancies of class and wealth.

From The New Yorker
In this cogent jeremiad, which is certain to be controversial, Michaels diagnoses America's love of diversity as one of our greatest problems. Not only does it reinforce ideas of racial essentialism that it claims to repudiate; it obscures the crevasse between rich and poor. Michaels, a scholar of American literature, suggests that the growth of economic inequality over the past few decades is the result of a deeply ingrained and unchallenged class structure. Scrutinizing current events and religion, he argues that our fixation with the "phantasm" of race promotes identity over ideology, and he rejects the idea that meritocracy prevails in America's elite universities. A believer in the power of progressive politics, he calls for a debate in which class, rather than identity, would be at the fore.

Review

“This is a different line, and there's a touch of genius about it.” ―The Economist.com

“Cogent... certain to be controversial.” ―The New Yorker

“Eloquent” ―The Chicago Tribune

“Rarely have I found myself more in agreement with a book's conclusion. To focus so obsessively on questions of diversity is, as Michaels rightly asserts, to opt for a politics of symbolism over a politics of results.” ―Slate

“Bracing... the greatest virtue of The Trouble With Diversity is the tenacity and precision with which Michaels dissects out muddled ideas about race and inequality.” ―The Nation

Draws sharp distinctions
By Gregory Marton
This book is aimed at drawing distinctions between subjective matters of identity and objective matters of income and beliefs. Each identity is as good as any other, but being poor is worse than being rich. Michaels accuses the left of having lost its focus on objective equality, to the point of glorifying poverty.

Treating poverty as a matter of identity is, according to Michaels, a pernicious strategy for willfully ignoring the problem that increasingly many people are increasingly poor, and have less and less opportunity to move out of poverty. Moreover, by fighting battles of identity -- WalMart and Wall Street women each making some percent less than the men -- we may ignore the fact that all the WalMart workers make a hundredth of what the Wall Street workers make. He does not argue against fighting injustices of identity so much as argue for prioritizing and looking at the problems in perspective.

The book draws sharp distinctions between the kinds of arguments that make sense for identities and those that make sense for wealth and ideology. It is a call to action in addressing "equality of opportunity" for everyone (the American Dream), hand in hand with reducing economic disparity.

This is an important social commentary, clearly and engagingly written, and exposing one of the great hidden weaknesses of politics in the United States. You may or may not be convinced, but reading it will broaden your view and sharpen your perspective.

Saying What Needs To Be Said
By Amazon Customer
The number one thing you need to keep in mind as you read my review is this: politically, I consider myself to be an "Independent" who leans way more to the left than to the right. O.K. Full steam ahead.

This is a topic that has interested me off and on for some time, coming from a background where I've seen the hardcore "diversity" rhetoric being force-fed in college classrooms across the country. You can't so much as throw a stone across a college campus without hitting something tagged with the diversity/multicultural label. It really has gotten to the point of mild insanity. And it is to the author's credit that he was willing to write a book that surely caused him no small amount of discomfort. In today's world, badmouthing "diversity" is akin to dangling a baby over a balcony. Everyone thinks diversity is just dandy... especially "radical" liberals making lots of money and living in fat houses far away from any "real" diversity. I was reminded of one of my professors in graduate school who lived in a fat house in the Berkeley Hills, probably worth over a million dollars (or more). Another professor, talking about him in a very serious tone, called him "a hardcore communist." It struck me as absurd. If he was really a hardcore communist, how could he ever justify his lifestyle of sipping drinks on the sunny patio of his million dollar home while beggars live off of peanuts just a few blocks away!

But this is what academics will try to sell you. And, again to the author's credit, he calls out his colleagues... big time!

If you have any sort of brain that has not been completely zombified by the "diversity" rhetoric being shoved in your face 24/7, you will have to agree with the basic tenets of this book. It is not a masterpiece by any means, but at least someone finally had the guts to just say, "Hey... this is getting pretty ridiculous!"

This is the era of the catch-phrase "diversity" and one can only hope that we start focusing on important issues fairly soon. Now, before you start hating on me... keep in mind my disclaimer at the beginning of the review. I am not some Glenn Beck-loving idiot. I lean more toward the left. I voted for Obama.

But I'm not about to drink the Multicultural Kool-Aid.

I buy the argument; you should buy the book.
By Joseph M. Powers
Prof. Michaels most persuasive point is that our society has neglected the laudable goal of striving for socio-economic diversity in our institutions in favor of emphasizing other classes of diversity. He relies on strong rhetorical skills to make this, and most of his points. He does not focus on the detailed statistics that would be necessary to convince many professional social scientists, but the prospective audience for this extended op-ed piece is more the general reader, who may be provoked into finding their own numbers to butress their arguments. The writing style is necessarily polemical, and it is likely that all readers will find some things with which to disagree. However, in contrast to other critics of modern implementations of diversity, the present author likely otherwise shares many views with advocates of diversity. Even those who take issue with Michaels' conclusions will find his ideas worth considering. His closest intellectual bedfellow is Thomas Franks, to whom considerable reference is made, along with a host of other timely sources (who may be dated in a few years!). I found the short book easily digestible in two hour-long evening readings.

The realm where all things are possible...
By T. Wyatt
This book was written with the innocence of a true seeker and the wisdom of a mature and practical guide. Gail ushered us through an esoteric adventure to Bali, to the Philippines and whetted our appetites to know the healers of Brazil. Her writing style is so open and complete, with so much vivid detail, I felt I was experientially there, in all of those places, experiencing all that she experienced. After reading her account, I was left with the feeling of having been exposed to the realm where anything is possible - the door of possibility has been forever opened for me. And for the spiritual aspirant, this tiny book is filled with gems for immediate application in our practices. Thank you, Gail, for your courage and willingness to share yourself with us all.

Healed while I read?
By F. Thompson
I felt compelled to read this book and I did so in one sitting. I was very surprised to feel like I was being healed and receiving energy as I read this book. There is a part where Gail speaks about lost soul parts from playing as a child and I felt 3 different parts come home to me. From that I felt a surge of happiness and childlike joy I hadn't felt in awhile. Then she wrote about the psychic surgeries and I felt my organs being rearranged (very strange). I also felt extremely lightheaded and a sense of good tiredness and sleepiness overcome me. This book is otherworldly and not because of the interesting and unique subject matter! I'm not saying this will happen to you but I can not deny what has happened to me. Thanks for sharing this free gift Gail. Wow.

An Amazing and uplifting story
By mary hancock
In this book Gail tells the story of her search for the truth regarding 'Psychic Surgery' and has also had the courage to enter a new phase of her journey in healing. Gail was guided by Spirit to meet the right teachers in Bali and the Philippines both working and healing with this 'Magnetic' and 'Psychic Surgery' energy level. With their teaching and the passing to her of 'The Gift', Gail has prepared herself to accept / access a higher and different vibrational energy to aid her healing of others. All future clients can only benefit from this augmented healing power. I hope to benefit from this myself at a future time. MH

Not a disappointment, but nothing to sing about.
By Aaron Frankland
WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!

The new Forgotten Realms adventure, Cormyr: The Tearing of the Weave, has a neat underlying premise. The heroes are called in to investigate a newly-dedicated Temple of Mystra. Their investigations lead them from the Temple, into the Vast Swamp, and from there into the Plane of Shadow, where they confront minion of Shar and Cyric who are allied in an effort to tear a whole in Mystra's Weave over the Vast Swamp. The heroes must not only stop the evil doers from succeeding, but also perhaps help a down-on-its luck tribe of lizardfolk, and rescue intended sacrifice victims along the way. In this respect, it is not a disappointment. If you are familiar with the history of Faerun, and more specifically between Shar and Mystra, and between Cyric and Mystra, you have a good foundation to run (or play in) this adventure. If you don't? That's where the critique begins.

What's the motive? Why be a hero here other than to walk through an adventure and risk life and limb? The problem here, as it is with A LOT of Wizards adventures is that they are all modified dungeon crawls with little roleplaying, and through that, little character development. Yes, character advancement - you climb levels, but not character development.

Heck, you really don't even get into the heart of "why rip a hole in the weave" beyond to give Shar her own little swamp on the face of Faerun, nor "how the hole is being made," aside from "bellows" and "sacrifices."

I particularly don't like the new model of separating out encounters into another section of the book. It seems wasted space and a means to build in more pages and jack up the price. (I paid full price for this at my FLGS. If you are interested in buying it, I recommend Amazon.com or some other means to get it at a serious discount.) Moreover, you find yourself constantly flipping between the descriptive text and the matching encounter to simply keep track of where the characters are at and what's going on. Frustrating.

Also, no table of contents? I know this is a pretty straight forward adventure. It is a dungeon crawl afterall. But a table of contents is one page, or even half a page, and helps the reader see the organization. So, why not?

The new templates are "nice," but nothing to sing about. Dragon magazine has printed better. (See Issue 322 for the Shade Racial Class Level Progression.) Still, the Dark is a nice go-between from "normal" to "shade". The magic items are minimal. And there are no new monsters to fawn over.

In the end, there are interesting sights and interesting foes to encounter. Wizards did not break from its mold in building this adventure. There is no cutting edge new dynamics, nor underlying twist that makes you revel in the mastery of design. All in all, it's not a disappointment. But it's also nothing to write home about.

Good for an experienced DM
By Jeffrey Prall
I mostly enjoyed this product. On the down side, the book does get a bit confusing due to the new encounter format. For those unfamiliar, all the tactical details of an encounter are listed seperately on another page than the general description and details of the area concerned. Meaning, you have to flip back and forth some to get the true measure of what is going on. The encounter format is not all bad though, it is fairly streamlined, containing all the pertainent info you need to run the particular combat. Also, due to the somewhat chaotic layout of the rift (the climax area of the adventure), it feels less organized than the other sites.

On the plus side, the encounters themselves are imaginative, with interesting opponents, obstacles, complications, and possible developments. While your characters aren't likely to leave a lot of recurring villians, they do pick up pieces of a puzzle along the way and visit interesting places.

I would recomment this product for those you can overlook the problems mentioned in the first paragraph.

Mediocre at best
By B. Tong
I was very disappointed with this book. It has little to do with Cormyr. Even if you're focused on setting a game in Cormyr you can skip purchasing this book. You'll get nothing in the way of useful source material. The adventure has one or two interesting parts, but you can definitely do better by writing your own. This book also seems to focus on a new style that comes off as focusing more on the fights than the story. I found important information scattered about the book and it was often difficult to make it fit together.

Amazon.com Review
Was the fall of Communism a direct result of a covert confederation between the U.S. government and the Vatican? So claim reporters Carl Bernstein and Marco Politi in His Holiness. Citing meetings between Pope John Paul II and high-level officials in the Reagan administration--including William Casey, director of the C.I.A.--they point to a "secret alliance" as the factor that sealed the collapse of Communism. The evidence marshaled by Bernstein and Politi--ranging from formerly secret American diplomatic cables to formerly secret Soviet Politburo minutei--doesn't always justify their bold conclusion, but it does provide plenty of new information about a key set of events in modern history.

An in-depth study of the papacy?what a leap of faith for a guy who helped break the Watergate story. Bernstein is joined by Italian journalist Politi, who has covered the papacy for 15 years.

Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Politi ... amass an impressive array of facts about the inner workings of the Vatican, the Pope's early life and dealings between the Pontiff and President Reagan's emissaries. -- The New York Times Book Review, Stephen Engelberg

The Political Part was OK
By Bruce J. Kratofil
Among the many books written about Pope John Paul II, the book by Carl Bernstein and Marco Politi, His Holiness, stands out. That's because it's focus is on the role played by the Pope, working along with the Reagan Administration, in causing the fall of communism.

This was a delicate balancing act for John Paul. As Stalin so famously pointed out about a previous pope, he had no military power, only moral and spiritual power. As they recount his first trip as Pope back to Poland

"What was talking place now in Warsaw's Victory Square was a breakthrough to unknown horizons. John Paul II never uttered a word that might lead directly to a confrontation between Church and state, between the party and Christian believers, but everything he said marked the beginning of a grand turnabout for the Church -- in Poland, in Eastern Europe, in the Soviet Union, in world affairs. Through him the Church was laying claim to a new role, no longer simply asking space for itself. Through him it was demanding respect for human rights as well as for Christian values, respect for every man and woman and for the autonomy of the individual. These demands represented a direct assault on the universal pretensions of Marxist ideology, which by now had become an empty shell in the countries under Soviet influence."

A campaign just by Solidarity, even aided by the Pope, may have gotten no farther than the Hungarians in 1956 or the Czechs in 1968. What was different now was that the West, especially the Reagan Administration in the US, and Margaret Thatcher's government in Great Britain, had moved away from detente and began to actively push back. John Paul II had similarly moved away from the Ostpolitik of Pope Paul VI. The book details the co-operation in intelligence between the US and the Vatican. It also provides, through Politburo minutes obtained by the authors, the futile attempts by the old men of the Kremlin, and later the unsuccessful attempts of the younger Gorbachev, to get the toothpaste back in the tube.

This book, which was released in 1996, was a five year collaboration between Carl Bernstein (best-known for his work with Bob Woodward in All the President's Men and The Final Days) and Marco Politi, who is both the dean of Vatican journalists working for La Repubblica and then Il Messaggero, and a former Moscow correspondent. Countering a criticism, over how do we know what was really said at private meetings recounted in these expos books, this book is quite detailed in its sourcing. The authors conducted, and documented, a long series of interviews with the people involved, up to and including President Reagan. The participants are quoted directly, and a Sources section at the back of the book shows who said what.

The book probably would have done better focusing strictly on the East-West struggles, but it was extended to include both a short biography of John Paul II's early life, plus a critique in the latter part of the book of the theological controversies during John Paul's long reign (and there were still nine years to go after the book came out.) While I'm interested in having Carl Bernstein as a guide through some of the great political struggles of the late 20th century, I really don't need him as a theology teacher.

While this isn't a new book, it is an interesting retrospective on one part of John Paul II's papacy.

Uneven coverage of a great man
By Big Mike
I started off really liking this book. The coverage of the Pope's early life up until his ascencion to the throne was very interesting and pretty well-done. Once he got to the papacy, there were two significant problems. First of all, there were whole sections that dealt with the CIA and other government agencies and didn't talk about the Pope very much. More troubling was what the authors did to the story after the fall of communism. It was like a totally different book. The immediately began using words like "angry" and "snapped" and "reactionary" and "militant" to describe the Pope's stand on moral issues. After championing him as a her in the fight against communism, they made him seem like a grumpy old man who can't keep up with the times when he dared to take a firm stance against abortion or the ordination of women priests. I threw the book away when I was done. Be smarter than me and don't buy it in the beginning!

Grinding the same old axes
By A Customer
Bernstein and Politi's biography of the Holy Father, John Paul II, is informative and intriguing, but these secular journalists just can't resist the temptation to harp on the same issues the world has with the Catholic Church.
Bernstein and Politi explode the myth that John Paul I was murdered in a "Vatican conspiracy," but they cannot see past the conspiracy to spread calumny against the Pope of WWII, Pius XII. When speaking of John Paul II's life during the war and later of his work as Pope to improve relations between Catholics and Jews, Bernstein and Politi cannot resist slamming Pius XII for his alleged "silence" and "inactivity" in saving Jews, when the fact is that the Orthodox Jewish scholar Pinchas Lapide has estimated that Pius XII and the Catholic Church were responsible for saving over 800,000 Jews from the Nazis.
Then there are the attempts by Bernstein and Politi to flog the dead horses of artificial contraception, abortion, and women's ordination. Instead of acknowledging that John Paul II is merely witnessing to the two thousand year tradition of the Catholic Church in denouncing artificial contraception, abortion, and women's ordination as incompatible with Christianity, these supposedly objective journalists attempt to psychoanalyze the Holy Father. According to these two, instead of upholding Catholic doctrine, the only reason the Holy Father condemns these things and at the same time reaffirms the sanctity of life and the holy vocation of motherhood is because he misses his mommy. Please! Of course the Holy Father's mother, Emilia Wojtyla, was an important influence on her son's life but this kind of amateur psychoanalysis on the parts of Bernstein and Politi is insulting not only to John Paul II but to those who already consider him John Paul the Great.
The authors' obviously liberal bias makes one question the rest of this biography's credibility and objectivity.
