Misleading title, out-of-date and insulting

This is a stern warning! If you're new to Blender, do not buy this book! It was published in 2010 and was not brought up to date. It was written for Blender 2.4, despite the title saying it's for Blender 2.6! I'm finishing Chapter 4, and I have found many, many differences between the context of various tools in this book, and their counterparts in even Blender 2.5. The author's attitude can be off-putting at times, and downright insulting in a few places. At one point very early on in the book, Roland Hess says basically that if I don't commit to the basic view controls to memory, that 3D isn't for me and that I should play with Crayola Model Magic. Mr. Hess, I've actually worked in 3D since late 2006, so no, I have not committed these controls to memory, because in every other application I have worked in (professionally I might add), the controls are completely different. I'm not a keyboard shortcut kind of person, and holding down the middle mouse button to manipulate my view in 3D space is not easy when your middle mouse button also scrolls and pans left and right. Yes, it is the default, but why not illustrate that all of the shortcuts and mouse actions can be changed? I have two very capable shoulder buttons on my mouse, and one of them serves just fine for moving around in the space. But that is just one example.

I have already found nearly a dozen errors associated with various actions and I'm not even done with Chapter 4 yet. Three times now, I have Googled major issues I have had with following steps in the book, and each one of them points to this book, Blender Foundations.

This book is an exercise in frustration, and I cannot recommend this book to anyone first starting out in 3D. As for me, it is a very good thing that I have already been working 3D applications for seven years, otherwise I would have no clue as to where to even start in regards to the steps in this book!

This is the book you're looking for

I assume that if you're reading this you're new to Blender and are looking for a great Blender book to get you up to speed. This is the book. I hate long-winded book reviews that boil down to a few relevant sentences so I will get straight to it.

There are three good reasons to buy this book.

1. Roland Hess knows Blender inside and out having been both a Blender artist and a software developer for some of its features. You can have tremendous confidence in what he tells you and know that it will save you time and make you a productive Blender user.

2. Hess focuses like a laser beam on the most important features of Blender and there are a lot of them. He doesn't wander into things that are nice, but you may use once in the course of a year. His writing is clear and direct. He gets to the point and offers professional advice that would take you years to learn on your own. He tackles the main pillars of the Blender platform: modeling, texturing, lighting and animation. His chapter on lighting is the most coherent and useful I have ever read. In addition, he has a number of extras on his web site like great videos on texturing and modeling. You can get most of the .blend files from his site as well.

3. This book will take you beyond the basics. Even though this is billed as a beginner book, Hess isn't afraid to build into the more advanced topics. Some of the stuff he covers like texturing aren't covered half as well in so called "advanced" texts. As an experienced Blender user I can highly recommend this book to intermediate and even advanced users. You will pick up some valuable info from the book. The tutorials are not cheesy little "let's make a coffee cup" tutorials. They're first rate and if you work through them you will be learning some important Blender skills and when you're done with the tutorials you will actually have something you can be proud of.

If you are new to Blender, get this book and study it. Do the tutorials if you can. It will be valuable practice. If you're a veteran Blender user and want to get up to speed with the totally new Blender interface and some of the new features, get this book. The proposition is simple: you can spend 6 months hacking away at Blender and just scratch the surface or you can get this book and spend a few weeks studying it and spend the next 6 months building dazzling CG.

I am brand new to Blender and have tried some of the YouTube videos for absolute beginners. Most go too quickly and do not explain the overall thinking of the layout of the Blender GUI and commands. Also, with the videos, it was easy to forget the important Blender commands. This book gives you more of a context of why commands are where they are and what they do, making it all easier to remember and get around. You will need to go out of your way to do memorization of the plethora of important, frequently needed Blender commands, but Hess specifically highlights commands that you will want to go out of your way to memorize. I added those commands on flash cards on Study Blue so I could practice memorizing them. This has worked out well.

I was originally concerned that following the Blender instructions in the book would be difficult because it was a book, not a video where you can see exactly what they are doing. But for some reason this is not a problem with this book.

By following the instructions in the book, you really feel like you made progress and got something done. And while doing a real project, you have gained understanding to do your own beginning projects. Roland Hess has a done a wonderful job making Blender more accessible to people who want to use this software.

A truly Touching and Inspirational Biography Of Kyrie Irving

I’m not a huge sports fan, nor do I read many biographies. But I do like to take a chance on genres outside my comfort zone at times, and I’m happy that I did or I would have never found this gem. The story was truly inspirational to me, and it was neat seeing what the life of a professional sports player is like behind the scenes. This autobiography covers Kyrie’s progression as an athlete from his youth all the way to his professional career in the NBA. Kyrie pushes himself beyond the breaking point, and never backs down no matter how hard it gets, his unwavering mindset is amazing.

I liked that the story was not a very long read and you can knock it out in one or two reading sessions, it’s just the raw story without a bunch of extra fluff. And my jaw literally dropped at the amount of money NBA players get contracted…like seriously it made me wish I choose the path of a professional basketball player after reading this.

If you’re a Kyrie Irving fan, like the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers, or you’re just looking to be inspired, then I suggest you give this book a chance.

Good book on a rising NBA star.

This is the second book in Clayton Geoffreys' s collection of unauthorized sports biographies that I have read and like the other one (Anthony Davis) it is a compact but complete description of Kyrie Irving's basketball career to date and the path to get there.

In this particular book about Irving, Geoffreys covers every aspect of Kyrie's game at all levels - youth and high school ball, his one abbreviated season at Duke and his success with the Cleveland Cavaliers. To round out the book, some interesting facts on Irving's family life and activities off the court are included.

What I especially like about the book is the ease in reading it. While reading it, it felt like Geoffreys and I were sitting on the porch talking about an amazing player. That is how this account of Kyrie Irving's career reads and will be enjoyed by any basketball fan.

I wish to thank Mr. Geoffreys for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

William R. Levacy holds a B.A. in literature and an M.A. in Education. He has been a practitioner of Vedic astrology or Jyotish, as it is called in India, since 1983. Bill also received a master’s degree in the Science of Creative Intelligence in 1977 from Maharishi European Research University, where he concentrated his studies on Vedic science. In 1996, Levacy was one of a very few Westerners to ever receive the prestigious Jyotish Kovid award from the Bangalore Chapter of the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences (ICAS). William Levacy takes a complex subject and translates it gracefully into a great book about Vedic Astrology, life purpose, and career. He has spent over two decades as a Vedic astrologer, has over 20 years experience as a performance specialist in the aerospace business, and has done over 10,000 Vedic Astrology charts for people over the years. I heard Levacy speak on Hay House Radio, and wanted to know more about him and his work both on a personal level and because as a counselor I see clients who are frustrated or burned out in their careers or may be making a life transition and are unsure of what to do next.

The book is divided into four parts, which helps make the material easier to grasp, and it includes a sample CD of Vedic astrology software, so readers can see the basics of what a chart looks like. If you're new to this subject, like I am, you may want to read his other books for more basics about Vedic Astrology (such as Beneath a Vedic Sky, or Vedic Astrology Simply Put-available February 2007), but this is one of the best books I've ever read about career and life purpose and it's helped me tremendously on a personal and professional level.

As a full-time Vedic astrologer of many years, and a fortunate former student of William Levacy, I absolutely love this beautiful book. It takes both a macro, "universal" perspective, explaining the breadth and depth of the philosophies and history of ancient Vedic knowledge, with the micro "personal" perspective of all the ways to understand your individual chart in terms of your talents and career success. Reading this book is like sitting at the feet of the master himself - the power of this writer's brain is astonishing, and yet he makes the information all delightfully available and digestable for everyone from the seasoned student to the beginning seeker. His incredible attention to detail blended with simple, philosophical explanations provides wisdom that can be applied to anyone in any area of their lives.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to further their understanding of their journey in life, astrology, and all things Vedic.

Peace of Mind. That is how I felt after reading Bill Levacy's new book. Beneath a Vedic Sun has helped my entire family. My husband and I learned so much about ourselves, our career paths and our greater life purpose after reading through the entire book, and examining our birth charts. It confirmed the things we were already doing right, and helped us to take specific action where we needed improvement. We also used the information in the book to understand, guide and support our three year old daughter, whose talents are just budding.

Great Content BAD Printing!

Today, I have received, and fully read (about 6 hours) the entirety of the Book of Tyrael.

The authors of this book (Matt Burns and Doug Alexander) had quite the task of matching the wonderful writing of Book of Cain (Flint Dille). I am happy to say that they were up to the challenge, and the writing of this book, is every bit as good as what was put forth, by Flint Dille.

As a complete Diablo lore nerd, I cannot begin to describe my anticipation for this particular lore book. I will most assuredly be re-reading this, many more times, before the release of, Reaper of Souls. I am left both satiated, and still wanting more!

If you are looking for more Diablo content, this is what you "should" buy! (Note the word "should!")

For now my friends, is where It breaks my heart, to talk about the flaws of this potentially wonderful book, the printing.

The Book of Cain, was designed and printed with wonderfully detailed artwork, great pagination, smart use of switching between printed and hand-written text. At no time was the TEXT ever unreadable!

Most of this book is suppose to look like Book of Cain pages glued to modern pages.
While I can surely appreciate the artistic intent, the coloring of these pages, is just too dark.

The black text on DARKLY colored backgrounds makes several words in the book unreadable!!!

Far too many of pages are only readable if you have a direct light beaming down onto the book.

For those of you who think I am probably just going blind, let me assure you that I do wear either glasses, or contacts, and have my vision checked yearly. This is not a case of eyesight.

The sections of the book, that do not exhibit this problem are Tyrael's own pages, these are black text, on a greyish background, and are quite pleasant to read.

However, since MOST of this book's content is meant to come from other notes and journals, kept by Deckard Cain, this means that a lot of content is difficult to actually read!

Not all of these "historical" pages are unreadable, in fact the inconsistency, in which each page is readable is absurd. I truly do not know if this was the result of a flaw in the printing process, or overuse of artist intent.

I WANT to recommend this to every Diablo nut out there, but I can't.

The content is so worth paying for, but just not in this format.

Buy it, if you must, but be prepared to read this in the noon-day sun, or with a flashlight.

Angelic!

The book contains beautiful illustrations on quality paper lined with "gold," giving you the feel that this was truly put together by a former angel. The only complaint I have is that we do not hear much from Tyrael. The book seems to be mostly a collection of the studies of Cain and Leah that Tyrael is "publishing" posthumously. However, this does not subtract from the quality of the book or the lore it presents (history, organizations, speculations, important figures in the history of Sanctuary). Like the map contained in the Book of Cain, the Book of Tyrael also has a "hidden treat" in the back of the book - a family tree relating to Tristam and King Leoric. I would recommend this book to any Diablo fan.

Unfortunately I some how added two to my cart and since my cart was such a big amount of items I didn't even notice. This really sucks but happens. This book is great and plays well with the game. This was a birthday gift to my husband who loves that it comes with so many extras and it's hard cover. My husband gets compliments on the book all of the time as it looks like a really cool book when it's standing in with other books. The pictures inside are beautiful. There is an envelope in the back with a family tree on both sides that is exquisite. This is just a great book that he would recommend to anyone and everyone.

strategy and dictatorships

Boudreau's theory is simple: dictators and protesters adapt strategies according to their opportunities and contexts. At times, the theory seems perhaps a bit too broad to make predictions, but Boudreau's application of the theory to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Burma helps put these authoritarian systems in a new light. In Indonesia, the New Order massacred Communists because they had networks throughout the countryside, where the army was relatively weak. By contrast, Burma's military focused on urban student protests because they represented the only viable element of democratic politics, whereas the army had strong anti-insurgent capabilities in the countryside. Marcos' regime wavered partly because of his lack of elite support and partly because Marcos came from the same social class as many of the protesters. Definitely worth reading for students of Southeast Asian studies.

Worth the wait...

I bought this book at a great price and will taking a class soon. It was used but it was in great shape and was decided as description. Not much to add but it's a must have book for Fire Office 2 in Florida.
