This book was a great addition to my library of books that are helping me understand the vegan diet. This book is not a casual read...it is written in a style to educate. Though I do not subscribe to a raw vegan diet, I am a vegetarian and through this book, I picked up some pointers that helped me tweak my diet and thus far, it was the best thing I ever did. I understand why raw vegans choose not to cook their foods, but now I also understand what raw food consumption can do for me.
I am a person who likes facts and I like to see the numbers, the charts, etc. This book is full of them.
I recommend this book for people who want to truly understand the food they eat and what it does for their bodies.

Very informative

I decided to try going raw due to some health concerns which came up for me recently. I've been a healthy eater for years now, so the raw thing isn't really TOO much of an extreme for me as it would be for some people. Although I'm not strictly vegan (or even vegetarian) with my normal diet, I always look for veg-friendly alternatives if I can find one. I know "going raw" is sort of controversial, so I wanted to be as informed as I could be before fully taking the plunge. I initially read one of Victoria Boutenko's books, which got me off to a good start, but I wanted more in depth nutrition information. Victoria Boutenko recommended green smoothies, but a person can't live on green smoothies and fruit. Or at least, I didn't feel I could! Once I started practicing a raw diet, something always felt like it was missing at the beginning, and I couldn't figure out what. I was still craving things, and it seemed only a hot meaty soup could hit the spot most days. Becoming Raw is great in the respect that it opened my eyes to some of the things which my body may have been lacking. Once I located my symptoms in the book and included more sources for the lacking nutrient, my cravings for meaty soup subsided. The author goes into detail about most (if not all) of our key nutritional requirements, which fruits and veg are sources for each nutrient, and what things to look out for which would indicate a nutrient deficiency. She also goes into detail about how each nutrient works together to create other nutrients, which I found to be extremely helpful (when I say nutrients, I'm including everything in that description...minerals, vitamins, micro-nutrients, etc.). Although the book is written with a focus on raw vegan diets, I think this book could be a valuable asset to anyone looking to learn about nutrition. I learned a lot from reading it and still reference it from time to time. The recipes, however, I found to be overly complicated or contain too many ingredients. It's easier sometimes to just eat fruits and veg cut up than it is to mix and mash them into things we recognize as foods. Peeling, cutting, and otherwise preparing raw fruit and veg is time consuming enough! I don't need extra stuff to do! But that's just me. The recipes do sound tasty, I'm just too pressed for time to go all gourmet with my raw foods right now. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn about how to meet nutritional requirements on a raw diet, and also anyone interested in learning about how your body breaks down and assimilates nutrients! I certainly learned more than I expected to!

An awesome book if.....
By Shay Johnson
you know what it is. This book isn't so much about what it's like to eat and live raw, it is more about the facts of a raw vs. cooked diet. Very scientific and lots of information brought in from modern research. To me, this book is a reference guide and great for students of nutrition and wellness.
It's allot of reading and not something you can just skim while hanging around at the pool. You will need to make an investment of your time to work through this book. If you know that going in, I think you will enjoy reading this book. Let me put it like this...this book is not fluff!
Sometimes you just want to read the more fluffy books and enjoy looking at amazing photos and peoples creativity. Other times you want to dive in and research. I will definitely keep this book on hand for research, however it was not really what I was looking for. I was looking for more of a step by step guide on how to transition into a raw life-style.
Having said that, the book is well organized, well written and a great reference for any serious raw foodie.
