Ancient Astronomy and Celestial Divination (Dibner Institute Studies in the History of Science and Technology)From Brand: The MIT Press

In the ancient world, the collection and study of celestial phenomena and the intepretation of their prophetic significance, especially as applied to kings and nations, were closely related sciences carried out by the same scholars. Both ancient sources and modern research agree that astronomy and celestial divination arose in Babylon. Only in the late nineteenth century, however, did scholars begin to identify and decipher the original Babylonian sources, and the process of understanding those sources has been long and difficult. This volume presents recent work on Babylonian celestial divination and on the Greek inheritors of the Babylonian tradition. Both philological and mathematical work are included. The essays shed new light on all of the known textual sources, including the omen series Enuma Anu Enlil, which contains omens from as far back as the early second or even third millennium, and the earliest personal horoscopes, from about 400 B.C., as well as the Astronomical Diaries, ephemerides, and other observational and mathematical texts. One essay concerns astronomical papyri that confirm the extensive transmission of Babylonian methods into Greek; a study of Ptolemy's lunar theory suggests that Ptolemy relied more on his own observations than previously thought; and an analysis of Theon's commentary on Ptolemy's Handy Tables shows that Theon explicated their meaning both conscientiously and competently.Contributors : Asger Aaboe, Alan C. Ancient Sex: New Essays (Classical Memories/Modern Identitie), by Kirk Ormand, Ruby Blondell

Ancient Sex: New Essays presents groundbreaking work in a post-Foucauldian mode on sexuality, sexual identities, and gender identities in ancient Greece and Rome. Since the production of Foucault’s History of Sexuality, the field of classics has been caught in a recursive loop of argument regarding the existence—or lack thereof—of "sexuality" (particularly "homosexuality") as a meaningful cultural concept for ancient Greece and Rome. Much of the argument concerning these issues, however, has failed to engage with the central argument of Foucault’s work, namely, the assertion that sexuality as we understand it is the correlative of a historically specific form of medical and legal discourse that emerged only in the late nineteenth century.

Rather than reopening old debates, Ancient Sex takes up Foucault’s call for discursive analysis and elucidates some of the ways that ancient Greek and Roman texts and visual arts articulate a culturally specific discourse about sexual matters. Each contributor presupposes that sexual and gendered identities are discursively produced, and teases out some of the ways that the Greeks and Romans spoke and thought about these issues. Comprising essays by emerging and established scholars, this volume emphasizes in particular: sexual discourses about women; the interaction between sexual identities and class status; gender as an unstable discursive category (even in antiquity); and the relationships between ancient and modern sexual categories.

An excellent selection of essays on ancient sexuality
By Robert A. Padgug
An excellent selection of essays on ancient sexuality, particularly homoeroticism from a modified Foucauldian point of view. Worth reading no matter what your personal views on or approaches to the subject are. Especially pleasant was the fact that you can buy the cd version for a very modest price and download it onto your computer as a set of PDFs. Highly recommended for those who already have some knowledge of the subjectg.

GENERATIONS. The History of America's Future 1584 to 2069., by William; Neil Howe Strauss

Hailed by national leaders as politically diverse as former Vice President Al Gore and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Generations has been heralded by reviewers as a brilliant, if somewhat unsettling, reassessment of where America is heading.

William Strauss and Neil Howe posit the history of America as a succession of generational biographies, beginning in 1584 and encompassing every-one through the children of today. Their bold theory is that each generation belongs to one of four types, and that these types repeat sequentially in a fixed pattern. The vision of Generations allows us to plot a recurring cycle in American history -- a cycle of spiritual awakenings and secular crises -- from the founding colonists through the present day and well into this millenium.

Generations is at once a refreshing historical narrative and a thrilling intuitive leap that reorders not only our history books but also our expectations for the twenty-first century.

Uncertain in today's Enriched World, but not bad
By mianfei
The book "Generations: the History of America's Future" is one that attracted me a great deal from finding about it on an astrology site about the outer planets. When one removes the mythology of astrology, the book proved initially very fascinating, because Strauss and Howe described four types of generation that they saw as repeating itself over up to five centuries. The "Idealist" generations were described as principled and creative, the "Reactive" as self-reliant and pragmatic, the "Civic" as social and conformist, and the "Adaptive" as sensitive and open-minded. The generations are related by Stauss and Howe to a cycle of "Awakening" and "Crisis". Between these are "inner-driven" and "outer-driven" eras when one "dominant" (Idealist or Civic) generation is at peak influence and the other "dominant" generation type becomes dormant.

"Awakenings" including such periods as the 1960s counterculture, the "Great Awakening" of the mid-eighteenth century, the 1890s Progressive movement, and the Transcendental period of the 1820s and 1830s. These periods in many ways are not well-defined because the essential ideologies of them can often appear to be very different, unless as they could have done the earlier "Awakenings" were extended internationally to the French Revolution, the "Decadents" or even the Wahhabi movement in Islam. The question of what the essential goal or purpose of these "Awakenings" was is not well-defined because in many cases they were anti-religion and exceedingly materialist, as seen with AC/DC. In contrast, many of the "Civic" generations, who are regarded as materialistic, were much less so in their prime of the 1940s and 1950s, when the upper and middle classes of the Enriched World reacted strongly against the materialism of the 1920s and 1930s.

More significantly, what we seem to be seeing in the post-1980s Enriched World is what Jean Twenge described as "Generation Me": a totally individualistic generation ruled by the desire for radical egalitarianism and absolute rights to do whatever one wants. History, and not only human history, shows that these absolute rights are the antithesis of civilisation, and they critically are extremely different from the conformist culture of "Civic" generations described in this book. They are even less like the "Adaptive" generations who are supposedly open-minded, caring and not worldly: there is clearly a loss of the cyclicality in the post-AC/DC age that was visible even when this book was written and can probably be related to the completion of the atheist takeover of the Enriched World.

The section about "Crisis" eras remains revealing today: Strauss and Howe do do a good job here, and it is much easier to see the similarities than with the "Awakenings": Americna society was severely malfunctioning, as was that of the rest of the Enriched World. As seen with the Civil War, past crises can have very bad endings if there is no strong leadership, and that may be seen clearly elsewhere with things like the Weimar hyperinflation, the French Revolution, and no doubt other places I cannot think of now.

All in all, this book misses possibilities clearly evident now and even when written, but it is still and interesting and by no means bad look at American history - finding fascinating patterns in the process.

Great the second time through
By jwinterscom
Not too long ago I started re-reading Strauss and Howe's tome "Generations" which is basically the gold standard in all things "generational theory". I've heard it said somewhere that a good book is one that you can read more than once and still get the same amount of thinking out of - that is certainly the case with "Generations".

"Generations" lays out clearly the contours of the Strauss-Howe generational theory, from the ideas of generations and the history of the study of generations, to the ways that generations interact with one another throughout time. "Generations" also does a fantastic job of tracing the sociological and historical data that have led them to their conclusions.

The only thing about "Generations" is that it's a huge read and at times can be a bit of a bore if you're not specifically interested in one era of history or if you are unfamiliar with the movers, shakers, and events of a certain era that end up being alluded to throughout the book. However, this book does provide a pretty decent primer or at least pointer for someone who is looking for a more in depth knowledge of the cultural history of the United States.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to begin to understand what generational theory is all about, anyone who works with groups of people that span the current 5-6 living generations (such as pastors), and anyone who is interested in the cultural development of the United States.

Where are the flying cars?
By Gregory J. Casteel
It's the 21st century already. Weren't we supposed to have flying cars by now? What about a moon base? Nuclear fusion? A cure for the common cold? As a kid growing up in the 1970s, raised on "Star Trek" reruns and back issues of "Popular Mechanics", I was always dreaming of the future. Everything I read or saw on TV convinced me that I would grow up to live in a utopian society, because science and technology would soon solve all of the world's problems. Everywhere I turned it seemed that optimistic futurists were touting groundbreaking advances in energy production, transportation, medicine, and space travel that were supposedly only a decade or two away. (For some reason, major breakthroughs in science and technology are always advertised as being about "a decade or two away.") Back then, I had every reason to believe that, by the turn of the 21st century, we'd all be commuting by high-speed maglev trains and hypersonic jetliners, getting unlimited power from solar arrays and fusion reactors, and watching the first humans explore the surface of Mars. But none of this happened. The optimistic futurists (and I'll count my childhood self among them, since I spent much of my time daydreaming about all the wonders the future would bring) got it wrong. But, then again, the pessimistic futurists, with their dystopian prophesies of a future plagued by nuclear war, pandemic disease, and complete societal collapse, also got it wrong. Why? Where did we make our mistakes?

For one thing, we were far too willing to let our hopes and dreams -- or, alternately, our fears and nightmares -- get the better of our dispassionate critical judgment. For another, we tried to model the flow of history as a simple, linear process in which the future can be extrapolated from past and present trends, rather than acknowledging that progress is often complex and non-linear. But our main failing was to give too much weight to the scientific and technological drivers of progress, and not enough to the social, political, and economic factors that shape the course of history. We were so preoccupied with the question of what was scientifically and technologically possible that we completely failed to ask what was economically affordable, politically feasible, and socially desirable. In other words, we focused on how to build cool stuff, not on how to pay for it, who would vote for it, or whether the public even wanted it. After we finally reached the moon, optimistic futurists like me assumed that we would press on to Mars and beyond just as soon as we had the technical capability to do so. It never occurred to us that the space program might get dramatically scaled back due to changing attitudes about the value of human space exploration. In essence, we failed to take into account the simple fact that society's values and priorities change over time. This is arguably the single biggest, and most common, mistake that forecasters make when trying to predict the future.

That's why all would-be prognosticators would be well advised to read this book (along with the authors' follow-up volume, "The Fourth Turning"). The authors' central thesis is that each generation has a very different outlook on life than the previous generation; and these generational differences are what drive social change over time. In fact, the authors contend that each generation will, at least to some extent, rebel against the dominant values and priorities of the preceding generation, which can cause dramatic reversals in social norms and public policies from one generation to the next. This would help to explain why a nation that was once so enthusiastic about putting a man on the moon could lose interest in space exploration so quickly after it had achieved this goal. As one generation comes of age and begins to step into the social roles previously occupied by an older generation, it will bring new values and new priorities with it. It will have its own agenda. This means that long-term projects will almost always face serious setbacks down the road, no matter how popular they may have been at their inception, due to the difficulty of maintaining their support as a new generation of workers, leaders, voters, and taxpayers comes of age. Forecasters who don't take this into account will end up making overly optimistic (or, in some cases, overly pessimistic) predictions.

I'm not going to take the time to analyze, critique, or even try to summarize the various ideas presented in this book. Other reviewers have already done this; and I don't really have all that much to add. Besides, I don't think it's possible to do justice to the authors' thesis in just a few paragraphs. All I'll say is that this book gives the reader a fascinating new way of looking at how history unfolds, and how to think about the future. Many of the ideas presented here are highly contested within academia; but, then again, most new ideas are highly contested within academia -- that's what academia is for: to put ideas to the test. The bottom line for me is that reading this book will give you a new perspective on how the world changes over time; and this may prove useful, especially if you want to be able to predict what the world will be like ten, twenty, or perhaps even fifty years from now. Where most futurists go wrong is to assume that today's dreams (or nightmares) will inevitably become tomorrow's reality. What they fail to realize is that each generation has a different set of dreams and nightmares. Your children and grandchildren won't pursue your dreams; they'll pursue their own. Any long-term forecast that doesn't take this simple truth into account will someday look as nave as my childhood prediction that, when I grew up, we would all have flying cars.

Forever Neverland, by Heather Killough-Walden

It has been five years since Wendy Darling and her brothers returned home after a harrowing ordeal in which they'd "gone missing" for several days and nights. To Wendy, they returned by fairy magic, fresh from the fight with Captain Hook, a little mussed up but none the worse for wear.

But to the rest of the world, Wendy and her brothers were abducted and put through such a traumatic experience, Wendy has subconsciously taken to hiding the truth from her brothers and herself by making up stories. Fairy stories – about a boy named Peter Pan and a world called Neverland.

Life is anything but a fairy story for them now. Wendy is being subjected to unwanted psychiatric therapy, her brothers are bullied at school, and the family is falling apart.

Then, one mist-filled night, a billowing black flag parts the clouds in the sky like the fin of a shark. It bears the stark white symbol of a skull and crossbones upon it.

Wendy has been forced to leave Neverland behind. But it is far from finished with her. In the blink of an eye, her world is once more turned upside down by a pixie in human form, a one-handed captain far more handsome and intriguing than she remembered him to be – and by a little boy… who grew up after all.

Neverland for those of us who grew up!
By D. Kang
I read one Heather Killough-Walden book on a whim because it was only .99 cents. I enjoyed the first book so when looking for another quick read for complete entertaining purposes I searched for more of her books. Seeing Forever Neverland on the list and reading its blurb peeked my interest. It also helped that it only cost 1.00 (can you tell that I don't like to pay a lot of money for my Kindle books?). I figured nothing ventured, nothing lost. At most, I'd read a poorly written book and waste a buck. However, I was pleasantly surprised from the beginning. As a childhood fan of Peter Pan I always fantasied about what happened after the Darling children returned. As an adult I was happy to finally get my "fantasy" come to life in this story. Its obviously not what I had in mind or else I would have written the book, but Walden created something so much better then I could have ever come up with!
Mixing in a dose of reality with fantasy was done with such ease and talent that the reader is instantly whisked away to their own Neverland. The harsh reality of the Darling children's return to the "real" world and the reintroduction of some of the Neverland friends is entrancing. I must say that the new focus on Captain Hook and his story was brilliant! As a child reading Peter Pan you naturally grow up to hate Captain Hook. The initial introduction of Hook brought back those scary and hate filled memories, but the memories slowly melted away; as does Wendy's, when his story is told. My only complaint is that I didn't want the story to end. Without giving anything away, I wanted the ending to be a little more concrete, but I guess Walden wanted the reader to venture into their imagination and continue the story in their own minds! Truly a must read!!!

Pure magic....
By Chaos Mykonos
Forever Neverland is a bold and daring journey straight into the very heart of Neverland. Wendy, Peter, Tink and Hook are brought back to life in captivating detail with added twists and new stories to tell. Their stories are as exciting and adventurous as ever as they deliver the heart-wrenching truth of what it means to be a real Lost Boy... or girl. I absolutely loved and was touched by Forever Neverland. I was caught up from the beginning to the electrifying end. Forever Neverland is a true treasure for the pirate at heart.

Very Disappointed
By butterfly950
Okay, so when I first read the description for this book it sounded very promising but when I finished reading it I was very disappointed. The first half of the book is very well done, although there are frequent typos and a couple of plot line errors. The plot line errors are the name of Wendy's teacher changing and the time period the story takes place, it is supposed to take place five years after the original events of the story by J. M. Barrie but the author set the book in modern times. That's cool, I think it is an interesting twist on the story but it left me confused for a while as to when exactly everything takes place. My confusion definitely took away from the well done beginning of this book.
The second half is where things take a turn for the worse. The writing lost something and I felt like I was reading a fan fiction. But I stuck it out and finished although I dreaded where the story was going. When I finished I realized that the story did have several well written sections and plot pieces but overall it failed to impress me and left me somewhat disturbed. I don't want to ruin the story because apparently some people liked it, according to the mass amount of five star reviews that I don't understand. The problem with Neverland itself and its outcome is not what disturbed me, but it was the relationship between two of the characters. Granted it was a legitimate twist to the traditional story and I have nothing wrong with that, but it was the result of that that I don't agree with. It seemed [...]in its most basic sense and I am assuming that that is why the author took the relationship no further than where it went.
So all in all, I think the story could have been wonderful if done a little differently. It certainly had promise but read like a rough draft.
