Roy Harrison OBE is Queen Elizabeth II Birmingham Centenary Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Birmingham. In 2004 he was appointed OBE for services to environmental science. Professor Harrison’s research interests lie in the field of environment and human health. His main specialism is in air pollution, from emissions through atmospheric chemical and physical transformations to exposure and effects on human health. Much of this work is designed to inform the development of policy.

BEST book on diet, nutrition and being healthy that I've ever read! Faith, expertise and heart of author makes it!

…At 49, I’ve been a binge eater for about three decades. For thirty years, the pattern’s been the same; Healthy breakfast, reasonable lunch…then I stuff my face with junk. I kept the weight off, for the most part, until about five years ago. That’s when my moderate binging (if there is such a thing) began to increase. A box of Cheezits and two pints of ice cream, or something equivalent, has become a nightly addiction. And it is an addiction. I crave the sweets and junk food to the point where I’m almost devoid of interest and bitter if I don’t have it. I’m angry that I can’t seem to control my eating.
…A couple weeks ago, I had recorded a program because, in flipping around the remote guide, I saw there was to be a guest who caught my attention. So, one morning I watched the interview. The guest was Kim Dolan Leto, and her book was F.I.T. Whatever it was that was in the two sentence description that caught my eye before, was magnified when the interview began. I’ve been trying to get a grip on this eating, binging, diet, hating myself for overeating thing for years. I’ve tried zero carb diets and lost all muscle mass and looked sickly. I tried all liquid diets and, after a week, ate everything not nailed down. And I’ve read all sorts of diet books, with only mild interest. From the moment Kim Leto opened her mouth, I was hooked.
…Kim Dolan Leto spoke about her dad, who had a stroke at 47. Though I exercise, I’ve been more and more concerned about the long term effects of my decade’s long binges. For the first time in my life, a recent blood test showed my cholesterol was a bit high. The author spoke to me in a way no previous diet or nutrition book author had. Her faith, her own struggles with dieting, her personality and her very apparent expertise all came through, loud and clear.
…A very caring person bought F.I.T. for me. Let me get right to the point. I’ve read a few exercise or nutrition books by famous people. Some chapters are overly long and complicated, while others are so short they leave you with more questions than answers. F.I.T. is the total opposite of that. The book is broken up into orderly, concise, informative, fairly short and personable chapters. Each is easy to read, but not full of fluff or info only a trained dietician could comprehend. Kim Leto clearly knows her stuff, which matters to me. But, the contents of each chapter are conveyed as though Leto is sitting right there, talking to you.
…Each chapter includes the practical application of what the chapter is about. She writes from the perspective of firsthand knowledge, and I could relate to so much of her personal story, though the specifics are different. Though the third of three nice dedications in her book is “to every woman who has struggled with her weight or body image”, this book is, to me, invaluable for both men “and” women. Personally, I would recommend it to "anyone" trying to diet and be healthy.
…You do not have to be of a particular faith to enjoy or reap the rewards of F.I.T. But, as a man of great faith and who places a great deal of value on faith, I very much appreciate that the author not only shares her strong faith, but she shows how faith is such an important part of diet and nutrition, much less everything else. Even more than Leto’s expertise, it’s her strong faith and the practical application of it to being fit that drew me to her and F.I.T.
…I’ve read F.I.T., but it’s not the kind of book you put away for a year, and then read again. It’s a book as well as a training manual. I will refer back to it, quite often, as I try to retrain myself the right way. The emphasis for my dieting attempts, in the past, has always been for the wrong reasons. I want to remain healthy for my family. The only times I’ve succeeded in life are when I let God be at the forefront of it all. Without at all being preachy, this book reaffirms that.
…My wife is reading F.I.T. next. Lots of diet and nutrition books have parts of what F.I.T. has, but none have the whole package. Leto has great expertise, and heart. I love the book, I love the way it’s laid out, and I love the size (definitively and utterly informative, but not two inches thick like a bloated encyclopedia). My great thanks to Kim Dolan Leto for writing this book.

A different approach to getting healthy!

"You can't turn on the TV or open a magazine without seeing a dieting product. We are so inundated with infomercials and ads, but if these products work, where are the lasting results? If 20 billion dollars are being spent on diet aids, and 108 million of us use them, how is it that nearly 70 percent of adults are overweight or obese? The answer is that we're trained in quick fixes that don't last." (pg 4).

So how can we lose weight? How can we find balance in the food choices we have in front of us? Is there a way to change our focus on not losing weight but instead getting healthy? Kim Dolan Leto, who has graced the covers of magazines like Oxygen, Fitness and Fitness Life believes that it is a belief in Christ that has kept her motivated to reach her fitness goals in a balanced and healthy way. In her book 10 Steps to Your F.I.T: Faith Inspired Transformation, she explains why your typical diets don't last and why as women we have a tendency to give up before we see any real results. She also explains that not all calories are created equal thus the reason why so many people can't lose weight or even those that do, put it all back on again and more within 2 years.

What you won't find her are any quick fixes but a balance approach to seeking God's power instead of our own will power for getting healthy. Weight loss will just be an added benefit to doing just that. She explains how fad diets promise quick results, but they often leave out the education, exercise, and how-to's to maintaining those results once the program is over. What's worse is that they make you rely on their product and believe it or not, any effects aren't long lasting.

She instructs readers on changing their negative thoughts, realizing where our previous efforts have failed us, and incorporates what she calls F.I.T. practices, between spiritual, mental and physical fitness into a "power hour." You won't find a book laced with work out routines, meal plans or recipes but this is an insightful, scripture based book to enable you to begin your journey to a healthy you. I am super excited to give this one a go, since I too, have been a diet junky, looking for a better way to lose weight, keep it off and stay healthy despite all the busy pressures of being a mom and wife.

There are some great tools to help inspire and keep you on the right path in each section, including Get F.I.T. at the conclusion of each chapter which include reflection questions and strategies that can help you incorporate that aspect into your own getting healthy plan. There are also some great online resources that are available to help you on your journey to health and fitness success that are included in this book. I can't wait to incorporate these tips in my own healthy lifestyle change and feels this one deserves a full 4.5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

Great book written for those of faith, and not necessarily someone who is looking for a lot of "Hallelujahs"...........

Really good book. Full of ideas and help. I would only add that journaling what you eat and what the circumstances/feelings were when you ate is also a really good thing to do (she does mention journaling, generally). Also drinking water (although I think she mentions this). I signed up for her website to get emails/newsletters to help with the "journey",.... I would also love it if she had a Facebook page (maybe she does, I haven't checked yet) so her "devotees" could communicate with her and each other. UPDATE: I found that she does have a private Facebook page for her "group" - so I signed up - along with purchasing some other items, which was really reasonable in cost.....THE BUMMER was that, after I ordered, I went into my email and found a "welcome letter" for signing up for her newsletter WITH a 15% off coupon - so I lost out on getting 15% off!...Time to get busy and put her ideas into action!

Now I do it all night every night

So okay. I wanna meet dem broads over there. So I say: "HEY! YOUSE BROADS OVER THERE! COME GET SOME"! And I grabs my package just to show dem broads what I got, but I dinnt thrust or nuttin cuz I'm a guy whose got class, y'know? Man, I thot nobody could be smoother than dat! But boy, was I wrong! Dem broads, they just say "Ha! You think you all that!?" And they just turned around and walked. Some of these broads today... They's gotten all stuck up, y'know? But you gotta work wit what's out there. So I buy this book and I learn it real good. Now I do it all night every night with some of da hottest broads on da planet. Seriously, man, BUY THIS BOOK! It's terrific!

A split personality of a book.

So, let's go ahead and get a few things out of the way first. One: I was given a free e-copy of this book in exchange for a review. Two: this did not affect my opinion of the book in the least bit. Three: I am not the target audience for this book due to my age or gender and as such my opinion (being my own) is heavily influenced by that along with life experience, culture, et cetera ad nauseum. With that out of the way let's get to the meat of the review, shall we?

I was disgusted by a large portion of this book, primarily in the first half because of sentences such as:

Chapter 1, paragraph three, page 10, "Rather, meeting women and, more importantly, talking them into an exchange of bodily fluids..."

Chapter 1, paragraph three, page 11, "I learned what turned women on and figured out how to become exactly what any woman was looking for at any given moment."

This to me was a very sad start to a book even one with such an inspiring title as, "How to Meet Broads". You're immediately treating women as if they're meant simply for fornication and that it's alright to make yourself out to be something you aren't. That "something" is tailored to what they may be looking for so you can shack up for the night. Combining this attitude with the over-the-top Casanova routine of the opening I was ready to put this read down right away and spend my time elsewhere. I don't particularly find that fair and wanting to give this book a fair shake I delved further:

Chapter 2, paragraph two, page 13, "You might be better off reading one of those I'm Worth Something self-help books. You can find them in your local Barnes & Noble, just behind the slouching, overweight woman in the ill-fitting jeans."

Chapter 2, paragraph two through three, page 19, "When you bring a girl home with you, the goal is to get her more drunk, not less, and if the girls you meet are at all like the ones I've known, they'll be perfectly happy with any beer you hand them... you have even more options to offer her so that she can get drunk enough to make the idea of sleeping with you seem like a good one."

So essentially we're further denigrating women and fully endorsing getting them schnockered so that while inebriated they're going to lower their standards (presumably) and sleep with you. In other words the book is advocating that you remove informed consent before moving to the bedroom.

Chapter 2, paragraph seven, page 28, "If you're not already aware of this, every single thing a guy does is done with one goal in mind: Getting laid." This particular utterance occurs frequently throughout the book. Obviously it's patently untrue and I found it especially sad, even as an attempt at humor (which it is never presented as) because it's degrading to men.

Chapter 3, paragraph two, page 43, "Combine this with the advent of psychiatry and the feminist movement and the omnipresence of Oprah, and somewhere along the line, men got the impression that it was no longer appropriate to be strong and independent. Instead, it has become acceptable - and often encouraged - for men to talk - and when necessary, cry - about their feelings. For the most part, men are all becoming giant pussies." Those darn pesky women are at it again, ruining as many men as possible. Gosh!

Included in the first half of the book are references to bestiality because of a man's choice of pet (page 18-19) and how getting a pet just to meet women is a great idea because responsible pet ownership surely starts that way for all men - it's all about having sex, am I right? Then you have such solid nuggets of wisdom such as getting a bigger television (page 16) in order to hopefully impart some false sense of class and money (we women are surely all about your pocketbook) and that being too clean makes you gay (page 19). We're also advised that talking to women at dinner is just the pits (page 63), and that all women hate each other by nature and are just dying to cut each other down at a moment's notice (page 71).

By Chapter 5 we have moved away from this for the most part minus a sparse peppering of such jewels as:

"Despite recent scientific studies which have proven that men's brains are indeed thirty percent larger than the average female's, women still like to think that they're much smarter than their male counterparts, and feel that they are impeccably equipped to offer advice on virtually any subject. You can use this to your advantage...Something like `I'm baking chocolate chip cookies and I think I threw away the recipe. You're a girl, right? How much flour am I supposed to use?'Or `Some friends and I were arguing about this earlier: What was the name of Tiffani-Amber Thiessen's character on 90210?'" on page 110.

The use of a pejorative word that begins with the letter "C" and is used to denote an undesirable woman is also dropped by about this point in the book.

I really wondered why I was still reading How to Meet Broads but, it's not all bad. The author, Mr. Cagney, reprints his columns for the bulk of the 204 pages of the book and his advice in those aspects while not revolutionary is at stark odds with his narrations. Almost all of the above quotes come from his chapter headings and for the most part don't reflect the actual conversations he has through his column. Furthermore he does impart some good advice that you'd expect to see given by an older friend / relative to one that is their junior. He reiterates that you should be confident in who you are, what you are, and how you are, if you're not you need to identify why and take steps to change that because if you don't respect and love yourself you aren't going to get on with others. He does laud women and appropriately lambast those that use them when he is giving advice, but it's so painfully set against the rest of his book that it feels hollow.

In addition he does call to the carpet both women and men who are being ridiculously unfair to their partners in the relationship, and reminds his readers (and those who write to him) to be honest and upfront. Mr. Cagney also frequently brings to the table an important thing that we forget a great deal when we're younger: we're young. You don't need to let yourself become dragged down and in the dumps because you had one bad relationship or you were rejected one time too many - it's going to happen and we can either deal with that and grow as a person or stagnate.

The ultimate problem that I had with this book was tone and it came across to me that the author was trying far too hard to be funny. He had a pretty good and level communication in his column, just enough snarky humor and solid advice (though at times very repetitive which has more to do with the questions asked than answers given) to reach the reader. Then he moves into very alienating territory by deriding women, any man that doesn't fit the image he paints of a perfect man (that all women surely salivate over), and with his language he removes a chance for us to reach a middle ground. This hypocrisy was most apparent when he defines the word "broad" positively and then uses it derogatorily in his advice on page 77.

I would not suggest this book to any younger men who are struggling with self confidence and approaching women because of the dual tone. I would recommend his column to them however, because what you see written to individuals varies so greatly from his personal screeds in the first half of the book. I teetered heavily between a 2 star and a 3 star rating before making a decision. I found many parts of this book incredibly and horrendously offensive; I tried however, to look at the overall effect of How to Meet Broads and at what was being attempted by the author. I believe there was an honest effort to help those struggling look at the patterns they have fallen into whether in their own life or relationships, to address some of this, and help people grow into better individuals. This is exemplified in the latter half of the book. I went with a three star because of those factors, even though it isn't original, new, or perfect, this book could help someone.

My only fear is that it may also hurt those who are already rejected, dejected, and looking for someone that appears at surface level to agree with whatever poor thoughts they hold of an entire gender. We should never validate those types of belief with any form of credibility because they are intrinsically damaging and dangerous.

Hilarious!

As a woman and (god willing) a broad, I found this book great! Mr. Cagney writing is lyrical, funny and heartfelt. He has written an honest account of a regular guy's attempts to meet a nice girl in an a way that's not pretentious or fake. Is great fun read even for the ladies out there. Get it for your brother or your guy friend who is always asking how to talk to women because the advice is solid! I can't wait to read the sequel "How to keep your Broad"- I will certainly get that one for my guy- not tat he needs help but hey, a little fun advice never hurt anyone, right? Way to go Mr. Cagney! Home Run!

Inspired by egalitarian doctrines, the Dalit communities in India have been fighting for basic human and civic rights since the middle of the nineteenth century. In this book, Shailaja Paik focuses on the struggle of Dalit women in one arena - the realm of formal education – and examines a range of interconnected social, cultural and political questions. What did education mean to women? How did changes in women’s education affect their views of themselves and their domestic work, public employment, marriage, sexuality, and childbearing and rearing? What does the dissonance between the rhetoric and practice of secular education tell us about the deeper historical entanglement with modernity as experienced by Dalit communities?

Dalit Women's Education in Modern India is a social and cultural history that challenges the triumphant narrative of modern secular education to analyse the constellation of social, economic, political and historical circumstances that both opened and closed opportunities to many Dalits. By focusing on marginalised Dalit women in modern Maharashtra, who have rarely been at the centre of systematic historical enquiry, Paik breathes life into their ideas, expectations, potentials, fears and frustrations. Addressing two major blind spots in the historiography of India and of the women’s movement, she historicises Dalit women’s experiences and constructs them as historical agents. The book combines archival research with historical fieldwork, and centres on themes including slum life, urban middle classes, social and sexual labour, and family, marriage and children to provide a penetrating portrait of the actions and lives of Dalit women.

From the Author
This work has a stronger narrative line than textbooks that often consist of case reports stitched together without any discussion of "black letter" law. Each case is introduced and placed within its larger social and legal context. The cases are streamlined versions designed to be comprehensible to ordinary readers while still conveying both the content and the philosophy of the opinion writer and major dissenters (if any). The book does away with many historical discussions, except where a discussion of history is needed to understand unique aspects of the American legal system. The style and organization of the book reflect the authors' 30 years of experience teaching law to both native speakers of English and students to whom English is a second language. In a word, the book is accessible to a wide range of readers and it is practical and useable in the classroom.
