Introduction to American Law (Carolina Academic Press Law Casebook), by Gerald McAlinn, Daniel Rosen, John P. Stern

The second edition of this book has been updated to cover essential developments in case law, as well as other important changes in American law, during the last five years. The fundamental rules, court cases, concepts and trends of each key subject in American law are presented in a narrative tailored to the reader without an American legal background. Each chapter covers a major area of law, summarizes the leading doctrines, analyzes recurring, current and developing trends, highlights areas of contemporary debate, offers streamlined versions of precedent-setting cases, raises questions for further discussion, and lists important vocabulary words. This book is ideal for readers who want to understand the contemporary American legal system at a more than superficial level, but who are not currently studying to become American lawyers. The style, organization and content make the book attractive for such readers as those planning on entering law school; paralegal assistants; students of American law outside of the United States; American undergraduates taking a course in American law and/or in a pre-law program; and graduate level students in subjects other than American law. The size, weight and price of the book are tailored to make the book attractive to students.

Review
"...This book is well organized, well written, and covers an extraordinary amount of material...." --Legal Information ALERT (Volume 25, Issue #6) Alert Publications, Inc., Chicago, IL. www (dot) alertpub (dot) com

From the Author
This work has a stronger narrative line than textbooks that often consist of case reports stitched together without any discussion of "black letter" law. Each case is introduced and placed within its larger social and legal context. The cases are streamlined versions designed to be comprehensible to ordinary readers while still conveying both the content and the philosophy of the opinion writer and major dissenters (if any). The book does away with many historical discussions, except where a discussion of history is needed to understand unique aspects of the American legal system. The style and organization of the book reflect the authors' 30 years of experience teaching law to both native speakers of English and students to whom English is a second language. In a word, the book is accessible to a wide range of readers and it is practical and useable in the classroom.

About the Author
Gerald Paul McAlinn is a professor of law at Keio Law School, Tokyo. Daniel Rosen is a professor of law at Chuo University Law School in Japan. John P. Stern is a professor of law at Nihon University Law School in Japan.
