A framework for conferencing

Conferencing with students about their work is the most effective way to move students' writing, but running conferences can be elusive. Reading this book is like ease dropping into Linda's conferences with her students. We leave gaining a framework of how to conduct effective conferences and best-practices of conferring with young adults.

If you can bear the slow first few chapters, you'll be blessed with great transcripts of different conferences in latter chapters.

Growing up in the south, I witnessed the damaging polarity of inter-racial bias within my own African-American community. I experienced the struggle caused by these divides that have been perpetuating since the days of slavery. The remnant left by the hands of white slave owners whose sole purpose was to control the black race, has a modern day name Colorism, coined by the author Alice Walker in the early 1980's. Colorism has proven to be a powerful catalyst in the dissension of African-Americans. Each generation has its own account of the damaging effects of discrimination and degradation experienced within the black race. Consequently, these effects have left many feeling inadequate, hurt, and trapped in a false reality that lack the reward of acceptance and social adequacy. I have seen the personal struggle and journey of the author. This life changing body of work entitled, "Momma, I Wanna be Light-skinned: My Journey to Acceptance", gives a detailed account of the author’s personal bouts with sufficiency. It sets the stage for this much needed discussion, not just with the reader, but within herself. Reliving this painful past has been arduous but necessary in starting the journey to healing and accepting her own God-given uniqueness and beauty. Not every person has identical discriminatory experiences. Some may have experienced social isolation and prejudice in other forms. Others may have been ridiculed for having different beliefs. Perhaps weight was the object of scrutiny. Maybe some were singled out for being too-light skinned. However, in "Momma I Wanna be Light-skinned: My Journey to Acceptance", the author bravely and transparently narrates her journey to wholeness by establishing a new paradigm of self-perception. Rhonda Bennett is a native of Tuskegee, Alabama. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL, where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. A mother of two extremely charismatic boys, Rhonda understands the importance of creating an environment that promotes success in an atmosphere where self confidence and purpose can thrive. She has a strong belief that her role as a parent is not to limit her children’s abilities and dreams to make life more convenient for her, but to make adjustments in her life that will incorporate her children and create opportunities for them. With that vision in mind, Rhonda founded two educational programs: Camp Xander-Well and F.O.C.U.S. (Forget Outside Circumstances Until Success) Academy. Both programs strive to enhance the educational experience by fostering a love for learning created from an atmosphere conducive to multiple learning styles. Rhonda desires for all children to realize the greatness within themselves. Awesome Book!

Sometimes embracing ourselves is one of the most challenging things to do. It’s almost as if we have to fight to be who we truly are because we have been told for so long who we aren't. Rhonda’s words in “Mama I Wanna Be Light-skinned”, are a reminder that we can be victorious in just who we’ve been called to be.

I believe it’s important to admit our weaknesses and to be able to face ourselves and see what’s really there. That’s what this book is about. It’s about honesty. It’s about dealing with insecurity. It’s about learning to accept our unique selves, even when those we love don’t.

"Mama I Wanna Be Light-skinned” goes deeper than complexion. It’s a relatable life journey that expresses what many of us may fear sharing aloud---those deep parts of us that we would rather keep hidden. Rhonda’s story of her own personal battle helps us to see that we’re not alone in our struggles. It’s an anthem of hope for anyone who has been battling with their own identity. Her testimony is a song that will continuously replay in the hearts of men and women everywhere.

Standing "O" and a million for this book!

This book is definitely a must have and read. For the first time in 32 years I read this book in a day and a half. Once you pick it up, it's hard to put it down. It's so touching and relatable. This book will have you looking at yourself in a whole new and positive way. If you, or someone you know have been dealing with self-esteem or self-confidence issues this book will for sure make you change the way you think...It's worth the purchase!

Wonderful book with a lot of heart!

This was such an awesome read! I never imagined that so many young ladies shared the same feelings as Rhonda, until I started to share the book. It was such an inspiration to see how she was able to overcome such personal issues and gain the courage to share them with her readers! I am so ready for the next book to be released! Cultural Communication through Food

Although this book is written by an anthropology professor, it is accessible to readers interested in Brazilian culture or to anyone who wants to know more about how people use food to assert their identity. It has even been shown experimentally that the food you prefer communicates something about yourself, whether voluntarily or involuntarily. A similar book about American tastes in food might be fun to read. Fajans includes recipes for those who want to try these delicious Brazilian dishes for themselves. (Disclaimer: Jane Fajans is a friend of mine, but I would enthusiastically recommend her book even if I had never heard of her.)

A mixed bag

Unless you are Brazilian or have lived in that country, do you really know what Brazilian food is? How has it been influenced by regional and foreign lands? Is there anything really authentic?

Well this book might help. Certainly it helped open this reviewer's eyes to just how big and culinary different Brazil really is. There is no one single climate, there are many regional differences, cultural identities play a major role in shaping the culinary map. This is an academically-written book that is fairly accessible for the curious gastronome, but do not make the mistake of thinking you will be getting recipes as well as a lot of great information. But saying that, there ARE a few recipes, but that is not the book's focus...

This book is relatively slim and yet it manages to pack a lot of interesting information within. To be fair, if you are not specifically curious about Brazilian culture or perhaps a wider Latin American context, this book is probably not for you. It doesn't make the cut as a "good, general interest"-type of book but that does not make it a bad book. Just a different book. It does deliver well what it sets out to do, but it is probably a book you would seek out rather than stumble across, if you can understand the semantic differences.

Unlike many academically-focussed books, there are no footnotes and specifically directed citations. The series of notes and bibliography at the end of the book does meet a need, but it is perhaps less academically-suited and focussed as it could be. That is a shame as it would not have affected the general 'accessibility' of the book for the non-academic reader. It just seems to be suffering a bit of an identity crisis. It is not full of colour photography, diagrams and laid out to be a 'mass consumer' book yet it is not really following the academic mould either. As a result, it has a bit of a mixed identity that can be confusing. Neither one or the other, perhaps in an attempt to be more inclusive.

The book could have been a lot, lot more if it had tried, that is sure. The content is good, interesting and throughout provoking but it is slightly let down (at least in the reviewed softcover version) by its execution and presentation.

Learning Word is fun now

I've never taken a class for this and need to make a bulletin for a non-profit organization and have used this a LOT! You don't have to read it through consecutively to get info. In fact, the intro says you can look at the parts you are interested in and don't have to have read the earlier ones. I do use some for basic info NOW but am reading it through just to make sure I don't lose any little tidbit that I can use.

As with all the Dummies books, it's cleverly written with wit and easy to find info with the layout and diagrams.

A Great Starter Book

When I was first confronted with Word 2013, my first thought was "Oh no, now what." I tried another book, but that was worse than Greek to me. I've always had good luck with "Dummies" books, and this was no different. Dan is a very clear writer. He walks you right through it. I recommend this to anyone as muddled as I was.

This book takes you into the world of Word 2013 step by step. Perfect for someone like myself who has been out of an office environment for over a decade. Techno savvy I am not! However, the instructions are very precise and concise, and yes - if you submit a question to the author, he WILL get back to you!!

Well worth every penny!

Undisciplined Author

I'm only halfway through but I think this is a book desperately in need of an editor--it was originally published by subscription. The original title in my facsimile copy is "The History of the Big Bonanza" so history was what I was expecting. Instead it seems to be a collection of newspaper/magazine columns. Lots of colorful stories but short on stuff I find interesting. For example the original discoverers are named & the reader is told they sold their rights but to whom? The order of the chapters seems to follow no reasonable chronology or even theme: Indian troubles is followed by the "state of the society" followed by early mining techniques then, if memory serves, off with a travelogue description of the Sierras. I don't know if I'll actually finish it but I'll probably stick it out. One does get a feel for the colorful early miners but I was also interested in the life of the area & the business history of NV silver mining. Mark Twain he's not.

Luckily for the reader, Leonard presents plenty of advice from pediatricians, gynecologists, family therapists, and parents who have been through it themselves. Topics cover changes couples face during pregnancy, birth, and all of baby number two's first year.

A confessed firstborn herself, Leonard openly admits she did not enjoy being knocked off her proverbial pedestal when "The Other One," her own baby sister, arrived. Perhaps that's why this former contributing editor to Parent's Magazine and author of Tales from Toddler Hell seems to take such glee in reporting the many stresses and strains caused by adding to the family. Helpful but mildly negative and outdated

Overall I feel the book was disjointed. It's most helpful for a woman still pregnant wanting to know how to cope with her own emotions about having two kids. I think I was personally looking for a book that talked more about managing the day to day with two children. I also don't agree with the bits about parents having to be tired and rundown looking all the time. How parents are definitely parents when you lack sleep and wear a one piece. I guess my experience so far has been much more positive and lively then what this sets the expectation to be. Lastly, the editing was subpar. Lots of typos and grammatical errors.

This is great book

When I was expecting my second son I read this book because there are not a lot of books designed for mother's expecting again. This book was easy to read, warm and very positive and supportive. It was almost like sitting down with a friend who already has two kids and hearing funny stories about the journey. This book gives practical advice as well. But rather than giving you a checklist for what to take to the hospital, this book tells you how to deal with sibling rivalry. This book is very positive and while it addresses some difficulties you experience when you have a second, it doesn't go into great detail about them. But the you can do it attitude of the book is infectious and by the time you finish the book your worries about having a second will have diminished greatly. Read it anytime you have doubt during your second pregnancy.

im pregnant with my second and this book has helped ease some of the normal anxiety of expanding the family. I like that she addresses all aspects of the pregnancy including your relationship, your first born, your pregnancy and birth the second time around. Very helpful book.
