Great translation!

"The Tale of Tales" was required for my Italian Fairy Tales class this semester. Nancy Canepa's translation of Basile is easy to read, entertaining, and full of hysterical (and very descriptive) metaphors. Canepa's footnotes are helpful in understanding the historical context, interesting, and definitely worth reading. I would recommend this translation, however it may not be appropriate for "little ones."

An excellently hilarious read

From the very beginning, I was hooked with the language and narrative of this book of stories. It was very entertaining to find a classic tome in which so much bathroom humor is constantly spread. In short, beautiful prose, excellent wit, and the translator did a wonderful job adapting this story for today's audience.

Pier Francesco Ferrari, Associate Professor, Department of Neuroscience, University of Parma , Italy,Giacomo Rizzolatti, Professor Emeritus, University of Parma, Italy

Pierfrancesco Ferrari is Associate Professor at the University of Parma, Italy, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland, USA. Ferrari's current research focuses on the functional role and development of parietal and premotor cortical functions in relation to social cognitive processes in human and nonhuman primates. From 2007 to 2008, Ferrari served as Adjunct Scientist at the NIH, Bethesda, USA, conducting research on cortical development in relation to cognitive functions in macaque monkeys. Together with Giacomo Rizzolatti he is Director of the International School of Neurosciences "Sir John Eccles", at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice, Italy.

Giacomo Rizzolatti has been President of the European Brain Behavior Society and Italian Society for Neuroscience. He is the Senior Scientist of the research team that discovered mirror neurons. His main research focus has been the role of the motor cortex in higher cognitive functions. He is member of Accademia dei Lincei, Academie des Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. He is the recipient of several prizes: "Golgi Prize for Physiology", "George Miller Award", "Grawemeyer Prize", Price of Asturias Prize for Science and Technology" Prix J.L. Signoret in Neuropsychologie" from the IPSEN Fondation, and the "Brain Prize from Lundbeck Foundation".

update on a seminal discovery

Some twenty [!] years have passed since a group of Italian scientists made the seminal discovery of mirror neurons. Now several researchers have contributed to this timely and concise report. The breadth of topics is impressive, showing how the idea has found traction in fields like rehabilitation of patients with muscular problems. Where possibly the viewing of unaffected people doing manual exercises might aid by training the motor neurons of the patient to relearn those actions.

Another topic discussed is action perception. Prior to the discovery of mirror neurons, this was an area of much speculation. But by studying the mirror neurons, scientists can deconstruct and approach the problem of action perception. Great for encouraging creative writing

This is a great book for encouraging creative writing. Has lots of fun and interesting pages and idea. Each open two pages covers an idea, like creating your own fairy tale, comic strip, or time travel story with lots of questions to help encourage ideas in the margins of the pages. Would totally buy again. Children who love writing will love this, and those who don't will feel inspired to try at least a few of the ideas.

Clayton M. Christensen is one of the world’s top experts on innovation and growth. He is Kim B. Clark Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. Christensen is cofounder of Innosight, a management consultancy; Rose Park Advisors, an investment firm; and the Clayton Christensen Institute, a nonprofit think tank. Grand theory applied to everything

Christensen reminds me of Marx and Engles; having come up with a new perspective on economics they then proceeded to write volumes and volumes applying it to everything and anything. (even astrophysics) Some of their applications were profoundly inciteful and well researched, some of them were more like wishful thinking and some were downright silly. I think Christensen's book the "Innovator's Dilemma" will rank as one of the classics of economic and social theory, on a level with works such as "the Wealth of Nations". In "Disrupting Class", he applies his theory of disruption to the field of education and not only provides an analysis of the field but makes some very strong predictions. However, in the case of education, as opposed to business, the mechanism of social change is not clearly laid out. (This was the problem with all of Marx's grand predictions, as Elster pointed out) Businesses change because old ones go bankrupt and new ones take their place, yet unwieldy bureaucracies can remain that way for hundreds of years (the Vatican). I would like to believe in the future of education in "Disrupting Class" but there is not enough explanation in the book of how this will come about. Still an interesting and thoughtful book, but not his best.

Public educators need to understand what disruptive innovation means for our schools

This is a very well presented theory on the upcoming revolution in public education. Clayton Christensen has provided an interesting model of disruptive innovation that has impacted the business world numerous times, and he makes an excellent case for how it will now disrupt public education. Any educational leader who is either unfamiliar with Christensen's theory or who chooses to ignore it will be left behind as this disruptive revolution continues to grow in education.
I believe that public schools can become a part of the revolution if they can find a way to embrace all that innovative technology has to offer. I am sure that there is a model for blended learning that would entail the best that technology has to offer along with the personal interaction and support that a classroom teacher can provide. If public schools don't fully embrace a blended model of education that produces positive results and continues to remain adaptable to the changing demands that our society puts on public education, then the public schools could well lose out to charter schools and on-line learning.

The best education reform book I've read

Reform isn't going to happen from the top-down, it's going to happen from the bottom-up. Individual teachers and whole schools will innovate in ways that reach the outlier students who don't fit in to regular school. As mainstream schools continue to fail despite increased funding, these other schools will continue to innovate and attract more students. Eventually, mainstream schools will either die out because of a lack of enrollment or they'll adapt.

In my discussions with fellow grad students in education, not everyone believes the claims of the book, they don't think innovation will actually happen. Believe what you want, but this book rang true to me.

A societal change that has had considerable influence on individ� uals and their relationships has been the emergence of the women's movement and changing roles and expectations for women. This change has brought new demands, fulfillments, and conflicts. Current styles of marriage have shifted from an automatic acceptance of clearly designated gender-determined roles toward more egalitarian and interdependent relationships with partners also expressing their own goals, styles, and personalities. The dual career or dual worker family has emerged as the dominant family structure in the United States.

Doctors' Marriages: A Look at the Problems and Their Solutions

My husband and I are both physicians; I work part time to take care of our 1 year old. He is still building his practice; so you can imagine our lives are a bit hectic. The book gave us a better perspective on what each other is going through in terms of stressors. Highly recommended reading for all professionals in a committed relationship whether or not you have any issues with the relationship.

For the intelligentsia and the layman alike.

What a gifted guy Swann was. To bad he died a little earlier than perhaps one would have anticipated.
The book is probably not quite what some think it is. If your a fan of Ingo Swann, you will most likely enjoy this book!
If your not a fan, then better hurry and buy his books before the prices go up any further!?! The prices are becoming ridiculous.
But the one I bought, which is the Kindle version, was reasonable. The book of the same name is going higher and higher....

Reviews the History of Psychic Research

Swann is a very engaging writer who has much personal experience in psychic research and practice. I bought this after reading Swann's "Penetration" and wanting to read more of his work. If I were naming the work, it would be something like "A Brief History of Psychic Research." I was impressed by his review of previous pyscyhic researchers, up thru Wilhelm Reich, and his discussion of how and maybe why such research has always been ghettoized by the typical Naturalist scientists. Finally, he does get to the title subject of psychic sexuality, which is equally interesting. I especially liked his description of his wild experiences with the Copper Mirror training.
