OH MY GOD!

This book is absolutely beyond amazing!

You can see not only how much efforts did the author contribute to every single page but also the exceptional details presented in each page.

I am in fact very surprised that this book only cost 15 dollars, I would willing to pay for this wonderful book for even 50 dollars.

It does worth that much, or even beyond! If you love paper craft, this book is a must-have, even perfect for thanksgiving present or a X'mas gift!!

Great book for lovers of paper art.

This book will give you either hours of fun or hours of headaches, hopefully both. These are kind of slice-form models of famous buildings, that collapse. Extremely detailed models, plus so much detail about their construction that it is nearly overwhelming.

WARNING - This book comes with a computer CD that contains all the patterns. If you buy it used, make SURE that the CD is still there or it will be just a coffee table book of nice pictures.

This author is a paper fanatic, and a treasure to the art world. If you like paper art, or would like to try it, get this book, an Exacto knife and a huge supply of #11 & #17 blades (great deals on Amazon!)and get busy.

I decided to do the hardest model in the book, (they are arranged in order of difficulty), and it is going to take me a couple years to finish in my spare time. There are thousands of very tiny intricate cuts to make, specially on the windows.

TIP - get the #17 Exacto blades to make the windows on the last model, and possible others as well. You can just punch them out instead of cutting with a pointed blade. Saves hours! If you are in paper art, you will know what I mean.

Not for the novice

I bought the book because I immediately saw myself spending hours building these models when I saw the cover. What fun I thought! What a novice I am is what I actually discovered. While the CD has ALL of the templates and the book has GREAT designs and photos NOWHERE are there tips on how to cut, fold or punch any of the designs. This disappointed me greatly. For Yee to be such a paper advocate I would have thought that at least the CD would have videos, photos or even links to other resources for any of the techniques he describes. This is not a book for someone who thinks they can sit down and build one in afternoon but if you want to build some skill with paper - this could be the inspirational book for you.

Like the First Edition, the Second Edition is organized into three parts. However, each part has been expanded to include new chapters or reorganized to incorporate new findings and concepts.

Part One introduces the idea that synapses modified by experience provide the basis for memory storage. It next describes the long-term potentiation methodology used to study how synapses are modified and concepts needed to understand the organization of synapses. The remaining chapters are organized around the idea that the synaptic changes that support long-term potentiation evolve in four overlapping stages referred to as (a) generation, (b) stabilization, (c) consolidation, and (d) maintenance. The goal of each chapter is to reveal that each stage depends on unique molecular processes and to describe what they are.

Part Two builds on this foundation to show how molecules and cellular processes that have been identified from studies of synaptic plasticity also participate in the making of memories. It discusses some of the basic conceptual issues researchers face in trying to relate memory to synaptic molecules and describes some of the behavioral and neurobiological methods that are used. The chapters describing the processes involved in memory formation and consolidation have been extensively modified to provide a more detailed account of the molecular events that are engaged to ensure that established memories endure. The chapters on memory modulation and the fate of retrieved memories have been extensively modified to provide a more in-depth account of the relevant processes.

Part Three is organized around the multiple memory systems view--that different neural systems have evolved to store the content contained in our experience. It features discussion of the medial-temporal hippocampal system that supports episodic memory, the concept of systems consolidation, and its relationship to Ribot's law--that memories become resistant to disruption as they age. The cortical-striatal system and its relationship to what are called behavioral actions and habits is described, and the book ends with a discussion of neural systems involved in the acquisition and removal of emotional memories.

About the Author

Jerry W. Rudy is College Professor of Distinction in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Virginia in 1970, and joined the UC Boulder faculty in 1980. The author of over 150 peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters, Dr. Rudy has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, Psychobiology, Developmental Psychobiology (Editor in Chief), Behavioral Neuroscience, Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, Learning and Memory, and Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (Associate Editor). He also served on the governing board and as President of the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology. He has received grant support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute of Health. Professor Rudy's research interests center on learning and memory processes. His research focused primarily on understanding the complementary contributions the hippocampus and neocortex make to learning and memory and the influence immune products have on memory. He is currently the director of the undergraduate neuroscience program at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Best for Overview of Hard Science Applied to Neuroscience

Prof. Rudy's book is a wonderful resource if you want to learn the latest summary of neuroscience, with a background in microbiology, as applied to memory and learning. The author's background is in cognitive psychology, but the book is his auto-didactic summary of the "hard" sciences in three logical progressions: 1. The Synaptic Basis of Memories, 2. Molecules and Memories, and 3. Neural Systems and Memories. At the conclusion of each of the 19 chapters he lists ca. 30-50 references (until 2013) from fundamental journals such as "Science," "Nature," and "Neuron," which are summarized in the chapter. His writing style is lucid and easily comprehended, aided by excellent figures, conveniently placed in the text, for conceptual understanding. In addition to being the previous chair of the neuroscience department, Prof. Rudy has taught from this book at the upper undergraduate level. Highly recommended.

Excellent Read

Forget the often-used mantra that "we don't know much about the brain." Jerry Rudy composed the book to reveal how much we actually know about molecular mechanisms of memory and learning. There are hundreds of research articles that are cited, yet this is only the frontier of memory research. The beautiful thing about this book is that it will captivate you and challenge the capacity of your imagination. The discussion about reconsolidation theory entranced me and I will leave that for you to discover. In short, the author attempts to cover as much on memory and learning as possible. Not just molecular mechanisms, but regions of the brain, neural systems, etc. He also uses research findings to rationalize the theories and ideas that he presents. For a neuro nerd, it is a must read!

I'm taking Jerry Rudy's neurobiology of learning and memory class this semester. The book is amazing and the man is a genius! It's really easy to follow along with and understand if you have a solid foundational understanding of how the brain operates. It's very eye opening and interesting, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a casual read. If you want to broaden your horizons and actually learn and retain new information, this ones for you!

About the Author

Martha L. Cottam is a Professor of Political Science in the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs at Washington state University. She specializes in political psychology, international politics, and intercommunal conflict. She has published books and articles on US foreign policy, decision making, nationalism, and Latin American politics. She received her Ph.D. from UCLA.

Elena Mastors is currently Vice President and Dean of Applied Research at the American Public University System. Previous to her work with APUS, she was an Associate Professor in the National Decision Making Department of the Naval War College, and also held various senior intelligence and policy positions in the Office of Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and the Defense Intelligence Agency. She has published numerous books, articles and papers on the subject of the political psychology of conflict and armed group. She received her Ph.D. from Washington State University.

Thomas Preston is a Professor of Political Science in the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs at Washington State University. He specializes in political psychology, leadership analysis, and international politics. He has written numerous books and articles on presidential leadership, weapons of mass destruction, and American foreign policy. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

Beth Dietz is Professor of Psychology at Miami University. Her research interests include social identity theory, computer-mediated communication, and the scholarship of teaching and learning..She teaches a variety of courses in psychology, including introductory psychology, social psychology, research design and analysis, and a graduate teaching practicum..She has strong interests in teaching online and using technology to enhance student learning. She received her Ph.D. in social psychology�from the University of Pittsburgh.

Fantastic intro to this topic!

This is one of a handful of college courses/textbooks that has stuck with me for the six years or more since I took Dr. Cottam's course. I took the course right out of the gate, first semester of university, with no other preparation (I agree with the guy who says that for best results you should probably know some social psychology first-but the book is good enough that you could survive without it!). At the time I was baffled, but the concepts were explained so clearly and with such good examples that when I did have more context later on (ie: became less ignorant) for the material, it all clicked. I still think about the ideas presented by Cottam et al and refer back to this book. Highly recommend!!

Great introduction to Political Psychology

This book is very recommended for anyone interested in politics, psychology, the reasons behind political actions and of course those taking beginner classes in political pschyology. The book is in an easy readable style and motivates you to learn various psychological concepts such as perception, emotions, cognition, group, etc. The book is well structured in focusing on the individual and then on the group. A chapter on leadership helps better understand presidential behavior.

In the second part (Ch. 6-10) many of the concepts are applied to specific areas of interest to political scientists: voting and the media, race and ethnicity, nationalism, political extremism and international relations. Each chapter concludes with a list of key terms (which are also bold within the text). At the end of the book, all terms are listed for quick reference.

However since this book is merely introductory, it will make you want to read more on the interesting topics. The literature lists at the end of each chapter give a good start for further research!

Actually a really helpful text

I took a class from the professor who wrote this book, and it was a breeze to compile essays from the very clear, coherent text. I'm not very interested in politics, and this made concepts and motivations very east to understand, and with highlighted vocab words and key concepts laid out, it was simple to digest academically.
