A must read book if you are an optometrist
By Eye Doc
If you are practicing optometry in the United States, you should definitely read this book. If you are, you're more likely practicing some level of negligence without knowing it. This book will help remind you of it.
The book is quite easy to read. I'm impressed that a JD can write a book in such a simple language, which is what I like most about it. First part of the book covers optometry law of the US. Then, it goes into the laws of each state from A to Z. I keep it in my office for good reference.

I also like that the book gives you different forms: informed consent forms, refusal forms, referral forms, surgical forms, other forms that you can copy and use for your office. Even these forms are written in a simple and concise language. Patients will feel more friendly reading and signing the forms.
The only little thing I'd wish was that the "Summary of Optometry Laws by State" section was not written in all CAP's. But that's just minor thing, and it's my personal preference.
Overall, I'd give this book an A+. It deserves to be read by all practicing optometrists. If you're an optometry student about to go into clinical, I would highly recommend this book as well.

By v2
I find Optometry Law extremely well written and easier to comprehend than your typical law book. It breaks down each section of the law with respect to Optometry into simple, concise descriptions. I especially like the sample cases and take home message after each section that makes the specific law Dr. Eap is explaining more applicable and easier to understand. The break down of the Clinical Optometry portion of this book is clearly organized into what is expected of the practitioner as standard of care as well as what can potentially result in legal action if the standard of care is breached. The sample forms that are included (for informed consent, dilation, release of patient information, just to name a few) make it easy to incorporate into any optometric practice. For all practicing OD's, this is an excellent reference book and will enable all clinicians to be more thorough and detail oriented.

Optometry Law
By MUFC fan
This new text by Stephen Eap, O.D., J.D., serves as an excellent reference to the numerous laws that govern the practice of optometry including negligence, assault, battery, informed consent, fraud, defamation, contract and liability. These important topics are described in a clear and concise manner. Dr. Eap then focuses on several clinical entities including contact lenses, binocular vision, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and dissects each with reference to the law. The final chapters deal with risk management and legal tips for the practitioner. In this age of consumerism and expanded scope of practice, the book serves as an important reference for the legal and ethical implications of providing quality eye and vision health care.

As a Decade Fades, by Joshua Fields Millburn

People don’t know how to love the ones they love until they disappear from their lives.

As he approaches thirty, Jody Grafton’s career as a singer-songwriter falls apart: he loses his record deal, his money, his fame—even his desire to create new music. While he stares at the rubble of his one-hit-wonder musical career, his mother is diagnosed with lung cancer, his marriage ends abruptly, and Jody starts drinking heavily to deaden his new reality.

When he hasn’t a single reason left to live, he attempts suicide and ends up in a psych ward where he’s prodded with questions he isn’t yet prepared to answer. Amid the tailspin, Jody receives a phone call from his recently estranged girlfriend and she has unexpected news: she’s pregnant.

As a Decade Fades begins with this phone call. As his twenties twilight, Jody Grafton grapples with loneliness, depression, lust, and infatuation while glancing at the mounting wreckage in his rearview. When he can’t fit—or force—the pieces of his life back together, he leaves his native Ohio to search for answers in the most unlikely of places.

From the Author
As a Decade Fadeswent through nearly 30 drafts and took on many different forms in the process. While the final version is a mere 250 pages, the book was roughly 950 pages a year before publication, at its bloated zenith. It was a bleak time when I peered down at that near-1000-page stack and realized that an ending wasn't in sight. I knew that to find a meaningful ending, I would have to get rid of the excess.

Condensing the story down to its essence required me to jettison some 600+ pages, which turned out to be a gruesome, heartbreaking process. If you had 10 children, which six would you chuck overboard to spare the remaining four? (Wait, don't answer that.) But those murdered pages weren't for naught. They served as an important part of the process; they helped form the now final novel. Without the complexities of an almost 1000-page monstrosity, I wouldn't've had the stone from which I chiseled the final sculpture. I couldn't've found the beauty without the banality.

I spent many days laboring on the prose contained on these pages. The final draft was closely scrutinized by more than a dozen proofreaders and two professional editors. And at the end of the day, I can look myself in the mirror and know that I could not have written a better book than the novel I'm publishing today.

It's worth noting thatAs a Decade Fadesis not a novel in the traditional sense. It is, more or less, a fragmented narrative of 24 short stories--some short, some long--segmented over three distinct sections. This feat was complicated to maneuver around, but I found it necessary to structure the book this way for a myriad of reasons that are hard to describe (if I could explain those reasons here, I probably would not've had to structure the book this way), but against my best judgment, I'll do my best to explain...

Although I consider myself a somewhat skilled fiction writer (I've written fiction appreciably longer than my well-known nonfiction), I do not think of myself as a natural novelist. Our post-MTV world is no longer a novelist's world. The world doesn't occur to me as a linear narrative; it's fragmented and broken, and it's up to us to put together the pieces of this flash-cut world as we see fit. Similarly, this book is not organized as a tidy linear narrative. It is fractured and parts of its plot are involuted and recursive andself-referential. Certain elements and plots are resolved in the traditional sense, while others are left without a neat little bow, and others still are left open to interpretation. The closer you read, the more questions you may have. But such is life.

Each of the book's 24 stories functions on its own. Thus, any one story can be read as a standalone piece, and a particular meaning or lesson gleaned from that single story. When combined, however, these stories work together to form a larger narrative, relating complex concepts that likely aren't apparent when the stories are read individually.

The way we read--particularly the way we read novels--is changing, and this book is my attempt to participate in that transformation. As a Decade Fadesis a reasonably difficult book; it is challenging, but it also has a more significant payoff than, say, a blog or a self-help book or even narrative nonfiction. I wrote this book with this in mind: I want the reader to do some work, and in exchange for said work, there is a greater payoff.

As a Decade Fadesis contains a certain amount of grammatical prestidigitation, and thus it is not meant to be read like a freshman college assignment. Much of the syntax is meant to take on the brain-voice as you get closer to the consciousness of a particular character (viz., I want to preserve an oralish, tumbling-words, out-loud feel to the work). Hence, you will often find omitted commas, long run-on sentences, extreme use of polysyndeton, passive construction, progressive tenses, unconventionalcompound contractions (e.g., "wouldn't've," "I'd've," and "y'all'ren't"), compound words that aren't real words(e.g., "livingroom," "coffeetable," "bumpersticker"), paragraphs beginning with compound conjunctions (e.g., "And but so"), and other intentional grammaticalfaux-pasin the text. These devices are used to advance the story in a more meaningful/realistic way--i.e., used for your benefit, not necessarily mine. Stated in plain English, I basically pretty much write how I talk.

Because this book is about a musician, and much of it has to do with his writing process, I wanted to structure the book a lot like an album with a bunch of individual tracks (see #2 above).

With all that said, ultimately, this bookisa novel, albeit a different kind of novel, one that welcomes literary fiction readers as well as people who don't read fiction at all. It was written in a way in which anyone can read it, tweeze from it their own meanings, and relate to the emotions of its characters. It is an emotion-filled book, and it is my intent, if anything, to connect with readers via these emotions.

Depressing
By FeeBee
The story of a discontented, misguided, troubled and unhappy man who battles with his past and his hopes for the future. I found myself sinking into despair along with the main character (Jody) as his life falls to pieces. What irked me about him was his apathy, self-pity and neediness. I finished the novel nowhere near as hopeful as Jody, unconvinced that the answers he had found would satisfy him.

Ironically overwritten
By Alex
Unfortunately, I found this book to be full of problems that made it difficult to appreciate the story. Parts of it were so over-written, purple, and self-indulgent while other parts were banal at best and pedantic and condescending at worst (the two page explication on African-American Vernacular English comes to mind...)

Also, and I know this is nit-picking but author's fondness for beginning sentences with "And but..." really annoyed me and distracted from the story every time it was used. I'm all for the creative use of language but the creativity has to actually work.

It's not that Joshua Fields Millburn is untalented. I think he just needs more, and perhaps a higher caliber of feedback, on his work if he's going to get beyond some of these habits. A healthy dose of ruthless-writers'-workshopesque-criticism might help him immensely. But kudos to him for working so hard.

Good but not Great
By John Bulmer, P. Eng.
I read this book using the Kindle for PC software. I say this because as a non tech-geek I have to wonder if the editing process is compromised on e-books. Before my complaints tho, I will start with the good news.

Promoted as a journey from one's past and getting over losses it holds true to course. But WOW, is it dark. Which in hindsight, life is. When life takes turns for the worse, its not great and not fixed the way TV and the movies fix it.

I found it refreshing to have that different outlook on life.

I also found it refreshing in having Jody described from the perspective of 3 different characters - Jody, the Boy, the Troubled Man. We all go through phases in life. Our self (i.e. Jody) is there through all of it, but we do have an alter ego (the Boy or the Troubled Man) for extended periods. Thanks for highlighting it in this unique way as it is what we do in life.

Now for the not good news. The editing of the book missed far too many potential fixes. Some outlined below. I discovered numerous contradictions and some outright errors.

Two passages describes Jody's post high school years. Both lead with 'After High School, Jody moved from Midvale to Dayton with ...". There must be more than these standard 10 words to describe this event. In one passage it describes Jody being with his brother and his best friend (p 78) in the other it describes Jody being with his two best friends (p 100). This is an inconsistency, and when did he get a brother? It is only briefly mentioned that he considered one of his best friends as his brother.

Throughout the book Jody speaks in very short sentences. Almost one word answers to deep questions. And then in one section he speaks in paragraphs during a conversation with Wes. This inconsistency is not believable given all that we know of Jody. And in this passage he starts paraphrasing everthing with 'Like', after not having done so anywhere else.

As a Canadian, it is down right poor research to describe my country as having 'thirteen providences' (p 178). In fact it has 10 provinces and 3 territories. I can overlook lumping all 13 in to one, but to call them providences????

3/4 of the way through the book, Jody appears to be on the path to a new life. He meets Amy and Asia and at that point he is not interested in drinking and possibly in not smoking anymore. Flip a few more pages and he is popping pills. Not framed as a relapse, but just something he would be doing any day of the week. This is not believable.

As my review title states, it is a good book, but not great. I might have been miffed if I had to pay the $15 for it.

Good story, poor production quality
By Jesse
DC put out two versions of this hardcover collection, but despite the larger size with the Facsimile Edition, I have to recommend the Deluxe Edition instead. The construction of this book is pretty shoddy. Within a few days of opening the shrink wrap the book had started to warp and bend. Eventually both covers formed a concave shape and the pages turned wavy. I only read the book once, and apparently being exposed to the air was enough to finish the job. I've had some similar problems with DC's standard-size hardcovers, but nothing as bad as this.

The story itself is a lot of fun in a campy, Silver Age way. I'm not huge on the new colors. Certain panels have a very eerie, digitized look to them. But it's definitely a story worth reading regardless of your fondness for the original comic. Just not in this particular format.

Amazing Adventure

For the technical people: The paper is glossy and the binding is sewn. The art has been recolored, but the work is excellent and makes the line art look amazing.

You'll be 'tempted' to keep reading long into the night!
By Erika Sorocco
Sophomore, and resident Waverly Academy It Girl, Jenny Humphrey, was on the brink of being expelled from Waverly, after taking the fall for the fire that burned down the Miller barn. Jenny knew that she was innocent of the crime, but with all of the rumors swirling around about her, she figured she would be better off back home in the City. Bags packed at the ready, and headed towards a cab, Jenny couldn't help but feel a longing to stay at Waverly. A place where she felt as if she finally fit in. Had made true friends. But just as she was leaving Waverly forever, things changed. Someone paid off the Miller's, blaming the fire on a group of rampant cows, and Jenny was reinstated. But not without a grudge.

All her life, Jenny Humphrey has never wanted anything more than to achieve a great education, and obtain some close friends who would stick by her through thick and thin. But as Jenny watched her so-called friends and classmates allow her to take the fall for a crime that she didn't commit, she couldn't help but feel as if she had been betrayed in the worst possible way. Now, back at Waverly, Jenny has resolved to put the past behind her, and make amends with her friends. But, as the saying goes, "you can forgive, but you can't forget." And Jenny especially can't forget the person who paid off the Miller's to get them to change their story. Jenny doesn't know who her savior is, but she is determined to find out - and fast. She suspects that her savior is the same person who has become her secret admirer, and plans on learning their identity at Waverly's annual Halloween masquerade ball. Brett Messerschmidt thought that she'd be able to keep her kissing indiscretions of the past few months a secret. But now that Jeremiah is back in the picture, Brett is quickly realizing that keeping your secrets dead and buried can be a challenge - especially when there's photographic evidence. Since she first appeared at Waverly, Tinsley Carmichael has been the girl every girl has wanted to be, and every guy wanted to be with. Now, after one little mistake, Tinsley suddenly finds herself ostracized from everyone - including Julian. Jenny's not the only one interested in finding true love at the ball. Southern princess Callie Vernon knows that her true prince charming is Kentucky-bred Easy Walsh. But since teaming up with the glamorous Tinsley Carmichael to get Jenny kicked out of Waverly, Easy has turned his back on the beautiful Callie. Now Callie, on a quest to prove to Easy that she's a decent human being, and truly in love with him, has resolved to dress as Cinderella for the ball. Her plan is to win back her guy by the stroke of midnight. But with Easy so angry, Callie can't help but wonder if the stroke of midnight is more likely to bring heartbreak her way.

Though it has only been a few short months since I read LUCKY, I feel as if decades have passed since I was able to, once again, mingle with Jenny, Tinsley, and the rest of the Waverly gang. Luckily, it was well worth the wait. TEMPTED brings about the truth of so many secrets that we were dying to learn more about; and even shows a different side of some of our beloved Waverly students. Jenny is finally showing more confidence, and, while her good girl ways are still in full effect, I can't help but wonder if she'll soon be moving into Tinsley's place as resident nasty girl. Callie seems as if she's on a roller coaster between vulnerable and vain, constantly switching it up - but her devotion to Easy is still there. Tinsley's infatuation with Julian is a surprise. But even more surprising is the lack of Julian's character within the pages of TEMPTED. Heath is showing a different side of himself that will make jaws drop. Easy Walsh, while still lurking behind that rebel without a cause persona, seems to have become slightly angrier as of late - probably due to his newfound appreciation for alcohol. Kara is finally coming out of her shell; but the tension and awkwardness between Brett and Kara emanates off the page - making even the reader uncomfortable. Cecily von Ziegesar has penned another winner. You'll be 'tempted' to keep reading long into the night!

All she ever wanted was to receive an excellent education and make good friends that will always be ...
By Shehryar Fatmi
Jenny Humphrey, the It Girl at Waverly Academy was on the edge of being expelled. Jenny took credit for a crime she did not commit, the fire that burned down the Miller barn. She came to Waverly Academy in the first place to get away from all the drama back in the city at her old school. All she ever wanted was to receive an excellent education and make good friends that will always be by her side, but her “friends” at Waverly let her take the fall for something she was innocent for. With rumors going around on how bad of a person Jenny is, she thought it would be best for her to head back to the city to her old school which she also hated. She didn’t want to leave Waverly Academy, she felt as if this was the one place where she actually belonged and wasn’t judged for as much. When she was all packed and just about to leave, someone had paid off the miller family and the rumors then changed from Jenny being responsible for the fire to the cows at the barn for being responsible. As Jenny decides to return to Waverly she knew that she had make amends with her friends and ask for forgiveness for all the rude things she said before she left. Callie Vernon and Tinsley Carmichael are teamed up to get Jenny Humphrey kicked out of Waverly for good. Tinsley has always been the It girl until Jenny arrived, now Tinsley’s main goal is to kick out Jenny of Waverly for good with the help of Callie. Jenny on the other hand is curious to find out who paid off the Miller family and stopped the story. The annual Waverly Halloween masquerade ball is coming up and Jenny is determined to find this person and also to find her secret admirer. Jenny isn’t the only one hoping to find love at the ball though, Callie Vernon out of her way to be with her Prince Charming Easy Walsh. Easy is now doubting to be with Callie ever since he found out that she has been working with Tinsley to kick out Jenny from Waverly. Callie is now going to prove to Easy at the ball that she is actually a good person and not evil. Will Easy figure out that Callie is a good or bad person? Will Jenny find the person who stopped the bad rumor story about her and her secret admirer? Will Tinsley stand in Jenny’s way? Will Callie finally be with her true love Easy? Find out when you read Tempted!

TEMPTED begins exactly where the last book, LUCKY, left off.

In the beginning of this novel, Callie Vernon is relentlessly lusting after Easy Walsh. The only thing stopping her from having Easy is the fact that he can't stand her. After he found out that she and Tinsley Carmichael tried to get Jenny Humphrey expelled, he wanted nothing to do with her. Callie knows that Easy is her prince. As the annual Halloween Ball approaches, Callie must decide on the most fabulous costume that will convince Easy that he is the one for her.

Meanwhile, Jenny has become something of a legend around campus. There aren't many people who can escape being expelled like she did. But who is her mystery savior? Someone spent thousands of dollars to make sure that she stayed at Waverly, but who?

Overall, this novel was amazing. Cecily von Ziegesar has created yet another spectacularly-written addition to the IT GIRL series. It was almost impossible to put this book down. It was suspenseful and interesting all at the same time. If you are a fan of any of the IT GIRL novels, this book will not disappoint you!

An exploration of the dynamic and innovative architecture and interiors commissioned by Louis Vuitton. A prescient advocate of contemporary interiors and architecture, Louis Vuitton continues to encourage innovation and playfulness in the designs of their retail spaces without losing sight of the essence of luxury central to its identity. This process of designing places to display high-style objects has created a new venue for cutting-edge architecture and transformed city streetscapes.
This exploration of Louis Vuitton’s international stores, as well as industrial sites and unrealized projects, includes interviews with some of today’s most talented architects and designers who discuss the beautiful and complex structures they have produced in collaboration with Louis Vuitton. This book examines the physical aspects of these buildings as well as the ideas that went into their composition.
Acting as both a backdrop for luxurious retail goods and the physical manifestation of the brand, these spaces are a genre unto themselves that invite exploration. With luxurious finishes and unexpected textures, these fantastic buildings represent the intersection of fashion and interior design. The book includes interviews with Jun Aoki, Peter Marino, Christian de Portzamparc, David McNulty, and Christian Reyne.

For fans of architecture and Louis Vuitton!
By Jason
I bought this book because I'm fond of Louis Vuitton handbags, and find myself inspired by the luxurious interiors of all the boutiques I've visited. Whether it's a small boutique inside of a large department store, or a freestanding Louis Vuitton shop, the interiors and exteriors are always well designed in the most beautiful of ways.

This book highlights several different international Louis Vuitton shops, and gives a wealth of information provided from the designers and architects themselves. There are rough sketches and floor plans of the boutiques, along with informative passages describing how they were built and designed. The pictures are glossy and stunning, and sure to leave you craving more Louis Vuitton. Even those who are not fans of the Louis Vuitton brand can appreciate the architectural information provided in this book.

The book itself is huge, bigger than even Vogue: The Covers. It should be noted that the cover of this book does not look like the picture. It is a monochrome, shiny silver. (Amanda)

lots of ideas esp the Asian Department stores.
By NiQ
LVMH architecture department really knew to be ahead of the curve in picking Jun Aoki to initially design its foray into Japan which was used to develop the Asian department stores esp Hong Kong. & subsequently Kengo Kuma to further develop visual treats.

I love LVMH in Asia & US,esp Vegas but not so much in Europe & East Europe where it stayed within its traditional intrepretation of department stores.

This book is dedicated to interior designers or architects
By Marcos Ferasso
This book is dedicated to interior designers or architects, (not to fashion lovers or enthusiasts) and covers main concept boutiques of LV. It is a milestone on luxury goods world in the way of interiors architecture. A must to have item, with photographs and detailed information on boutiques, the concepts used to construct those concept boutiques, of this prestigious brand in the luxury world.

Outstanding
By Preston A. Ball
This is an outstanding read, one of the two best first-person narratives from the FDNY that I've read, and I've read most of them. This very readable work details the career of a Manhattan fire officer through training, promotion, and an unimaginable amount of fire duty, told in very detailed prose that had me dragging hose and forcing doors alongside him. The number and seriousnes of the fires these guys went (and go) to boggles the mind of those of us like me who serve in mere mortal fire departments, and explains why the FDNY is the Broadway, the Mecca, and the Holy Land of the fire service. It's a long book but held my attention all the way through. There are a few editing errors and errors of some named individuals, but overall these are inconsequential. The book ends with the events of 9/11 and his decision to retire, and concludes with a scathing political tirade against the forces that poisoned the FDNY environment (bureaucrats, bean counters, liberal politicians, the media, police presence, etc) that is so anti-PC that that portion deserves a standing ovation on its own merits, apart from the shining gift of the remainder of the book. Overall, a fantastic gem.

Is This America?: Katrina as Cultural Trauma (Katrina Bookshelf), by Ron Eyerman

From police on the street, to the mayor of New Orleans and FEMA administrators, government officials monumentally failed to protect the most vulnerable residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast during the Katrina disaster. This violation of the social contract undermined the foundational narratives and myths of the American nation and spawned a profound, often contentious public debate over the meaning of Katrina’s devastation. A wide range of voices and images attempted to clarify what happened, name those responsible, identify the victims, and decide what should be done. This debate took place in forums ranging from mass media and the political arena to the arts and popular culture, as various narratives emerged and competed to tell the story of Katrina.

Is This America? explores how Katrina has been constructed as a cultural trauma in print media, the arts and popular culture, and television coverage. Using stories told by the New York Times, New Orleans Times-Picayune, Time, Newsweek, NBC, and CNN, as well as the works of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and graphic designers, Ron Eyerman analyzes how these narratives publicly articulated collective pain and loss. He demonstrates that, by exposing a foundational racial cleavage in American society, these expressions of cultural trauma turned individual experiences of suffering during Katrina into a national debate about the failure of the white majority in the United States to care about the black minority.

Review
"A fine piece of scholarship. It’s clearly written and plainly argued, and it’s based on a remarkably thorough research project that covers more media representations of Hurricane Katrina than I’ve seen analyzed in a single place. It engages important cultural questions as well as emerging themes about trauma and the impact of disasters." (Eric Klinenberg, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge, New York University, and author of Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago)

" the perfect summation of how I feel
By Amazon Customer
I'm an artist and among my subjects is the aftermath of that hurricane and the botched recovery. I've been working on that theme for years now,
with Eyerman's title for book, "Is this America?" the perfect summation of how I feel, thus my reaction fits the category of cultural trauma. Now, though, so many more things are happening in the social /political sphere that arouse the same question, the same incredulity. I will follow with interest what the author has to say about these later manifestations of cultural trauma and the re-evaluation of what our country stands for.

Bunk. Having lived in NOLA during this time, the real narrative is that local, state and Federal government served all the people of New Orleans poorly! Those of us, white, black, Hispanic, and Vietnamese, left banded together to help in other as we realized the government had abandoned us. Outsiders made Katrina all about race. The group that suffered the worse was the elderly according to the death statistics and post Katrina obituaries.
