Monogamy Songs is 2 sides (a and b) of lyrical poetry at its best. Each poem can be viewed as an album track, with so many lines that resonate as highly quotable and printable on a t-shirt:

Track 1 - "There's no reason to care about the weather when there are roofs."
Track 2 - "What is so magical about a marker?"
Track 3 - "When I am not writing poems, I am breaking backs."

Monogamy Songs is the kind of book that you lose sleep over because you can't put it down at 2AM. It is the kind of book that you read during your only 10 minute break at work. The book has the courage to not succumb to any genre. Is it a memoir? Is it poetry? Is it fiction? It doesn't matter. What really matters is the beauty of the images. The beauty in the dance between poetry and pop culture. The beauty of telling a story so genuine and heart wrenching that you just can't put it down. It is impossible to give just one memorable quote from the book. The entire book is a memorable quote. The book is so good I called my ex girlfriend from high school and told her to buy it right away. So good it can overcome anything including awkward exes!! An Excellent Approach to Helping Folks Overcome Presentation Phobia

I have assessed at least 5 other textbooks about Basic Presentation Skills and this is, by far, the most positive, comprehensive and clearly written I have ever seen for EFL or ESL learners. Of course, it is not perfect. But it takes the right approach by starting with the easiest and least intimidating skills first, then incrementally building up to more advanced concepts. The DVD includes several very well produced, enlightening, and entertaining demo presentations that would engage ANY class of learners--not just second language learners--and the overall tone of the package (book and DVD together) is so up-beat and positive that it will help just about anyone to overcome one of life's greatest fears, the fear of public speaking. Highly Recommended!

Of little use

The best feature of this text is a DVD containing example presentations. Unfortunately, the impetus for the design of the presentations seems to have been more on being amusing and "professional" than on utility for either instructors or learners: none bears repeated viewing, and intrusive voiceovers militate further against intensive viewing.
The textbook portion of the course is liberally larded with illustrations that do not contribute to learning, and the pacing of the text uneven in the extreme: instructors will find classes ripping through 10 or 15 pages per hour in one section and taking 2-3 hours per page in others. The text does not lend itself to language instruction _per se_; the presentation skills ostensibly taught are not likely to be useful for future presenters aside from (as would any other textbook or practice) providing opportunities for practice.
A further caution about a "new" edition currently being marketed by the publisher, this "new" edition including access to an "E-book": the "new" edition consists of a new cover only: not a word of the text has changed, and the "E-book" is simply a slow, poorly designed Javascript rendering of the textbook.
Overall, not recommended at all.

A Sketchy Multi-Generational Portrait

First let me say that Jhumpa Lahiri is my goddess of literature. I read a lot - maybe 75 books a year - and I have rarely fallen under the spell of a book the way I did with Interpreter of Maladies. Her follow-up collection of short stories, Unaccustomed Earth, was also an unqualified 5-star success.

So I was dying to get my hands on her new novel, The Lowland. I read through it eagerly but I closed the last page with mixed feelings.

Let's start with the good: Ms. Lahiri is a natural-born storyteller. In this book, she introduces two brothers, close in age who are poles apart - Udayan, the revolutionary brother who gets caught up in the Mao-inspired Naxalite movement to wipe out poverty in India and his more reserved and dutiful brother, Subhash, who leaves home to pursue an academic and scientific life in Rhode Island. When Udayan inevitably gets swept into a revolutionary movement that turns out badly, Subhash returns home -briefly - and picks up the pieces, including an attempt to heal the emotional scars of his brother's young wife.

As the plot goes on - and it is not my desire to encapsulate the plot or to create spoilers - about 70 years of family history is condensed into a mere 340 pages. Themes play out and then they play out again: the connections that make and break us, the intertwining to people we cannot truly see or know, the way we are defined by the place we call "home", the quiet differences we make in the world. It's all wound up in the history of India and indeed, Ms. Lahiri is at her very finest when she's describing Indian customs or lifestyles as only an insider can.

There's some lovely craftsmanship here, not bells and whistles, but quiet and contemplative -- even shimmering - moments. The problem is, I never found it to be very compelling. Because of all the years and generations (four of them) that Ms. Lahiri has to cover, she can only provide sketches of her characters. And they never truly come alive.

Yes, Udayan is the fiery revolutionary...but what made him so and why was he willing to sacrifice so much (the headiness of youth and a sense of fairness should only be the beginning). His wife, Guari, who eventually bonds with Subhash, was an enigma to be throughout. She is a distanced character, and her actions begin to feel somewhat predictable; the reader is never treated to her resonance and depth. And Bela, her daughter, is only revealed in limited emotional scope.

A novel, unlike a short story, demands a considerable emotional tension, a multi-textured richness that makes characters leap off the page. I never really sensed the two-dimensionality, possibly because the story line was multi-generational and ambitious. The litmus test of whether or not you will love this book is this: if you loved Namesake, this is definitely a book for you, since stylistically, there are similarities. If you are, instead, a fan of her short stories, you may or may not be engaged. Judge for yourself.

Intellectually but not emotionally compelling

There is no doubt that Jhumpa Lahiri is a talented writer, but The Lowland is one of the most depressing books I have read in a long time. Considering the underlying passion that motivated the life altering decisions of the main characters, this book was oddly devoid of passion. The reader does not get caught up in fervor of Udayan's social activism, the highs and lows of the marital relationships, and the depth of the parent - child bonds. Instead you view all of these moments at arm's length, only feeling the sadness, isolation and futility of all of (with the possible exception of Bela) their lives. The Lowland is not a book that will have you tearing up as you experience joy and sorrow through well drawn characters in turmoil. Rather, it is more of an intellectual exercise that will give you plenty to think about when you are done, but will not touch you in your heart.

Shame on the author for writing and publisher to take it further

I have read many books by Indian Authors and the movement from India to America. I understand the characters and stories around coming to a new culture.
This book represents to me the worst that capitalism brings to the world today. A greedy publisher and a very non-caring writer, cashing on their past laurels. Jhumpa Lahiri should have given serious thought on what exactly was the purpose of writing the book. I don't think serious thought was given. The publisher should have looked at the book and reviewed it on its own merit.

The book is a collection of characters who are supposedly connected to each other as family. Just like the book itself, there is no purpose to any of their lives. The book keeps jumping from character to character and locations aimlessly. You are constantly reminding yourself that an author of her level, is taking you somewhere, the story has a purpose, the book has a message and that the ending will lead you somewhere. Eventually it leads you nowhere.

At the end of the book, you feel, you read something about some characters whose lives had no purpose. The characters did not feel connected to each other in anyway. Their actions did not reflect that they were influenced by their past.

I have rarely written such a negative review but I do not see myself buying another book by this author. I feel she took away time from my life, took me down a journey which lead nowhere. I think she needs to reflect on how many books she can write on an Indian moving to America, living in a small town. She needs to reflect, is there more to her creativity than these themes.

She needs to reflect wether she want to encash on her name all her life or actually explore her creativity.

At the end, neither do I recommend this book, nor this author anymore.
Shame on the Publisher to focus on the greed of selling books than reviewing the book on its merit.

"We have to have a little beauty in our lives, even in the midst of the struggle." *

In all honesty, I've avoided reading Zinn's "Emma" (and his "Marx in Soho") for years because my experience with literary pieces written by scholars is that they're usually didactic and lifeless. This was stupid on my part. After all, the eloquence of Zinn's You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train brought tears to my eyes on several occasions, and one of the things that makes his People's History a classic is the beauty of his style.

So reading "Emma," when I finally turned to it, was pure pleasure. The play is divided into 2 acts with 23 scenes between them. The first act tracks Emma's life up to Alexander Berkman's assassination attempt on Henry Clay Frick. The second focuses on Emma's life up to her arrest (and eventual deportation) during World War I, with special emphasis on her tumultuous love affair with Ben Reitman.

Zinn wants to pull off two things in "Emma": give the audience a good (although necessarily impressionistic) portrait of Emma Goldman the person, and also tell the audience something about her anarchist ideals and lifework. He does a good job of both, and especially manages to get across Emma's sheer love of life--"I realized my life could be...ecstatic," as she says at one point (p. 48)--that frequently set her apart from more dour, humorless fellow revolutionaries. (What might the Russian revolution have become if Lenin and Trotsky had loved life as fervently as Emma did?)

Zinn also succeeds, without being heavy-handed, in showing Emma's ongoing relevance (something he also pulls off with Marx in "Marx in Soho"). At one point in the second act, for example, Emma gives a speech on patriotism. "What is patriotism?" she asks her audience--that is, us. "Those who have had the fortune of being born on some particular spot consider themselves better, and nobler than the living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that chosen spot to fight, kill, and die to impose his superiority upon all the others. Patriotism is the nourishment of war." A member of the audience shouts in protest that "patriotism makes us a united people!" "Yes," replies Emma, "it unites us, against others!"

"Emma" is guaranteed to whet one's appetite for more, and it sent me scurrying to reread old favorites--Kropotkin, Berkman, and Emma herself--who I haven't read in ages. I'd be ecstatic if I could actually see the play performed on stage. In this day and time especially, it merits a wide audience.

Accurate and Needed but...

Zinn does an excellent job of introducing readers to Goldman, Berkman, Most, Reitman and others. Readers get an accurate sense of their personalities and concerns, a consequence of Zinn's ability to adapt actual source material in the dialogue.
The problem with play is that its intention seems to almost entirely consist in introducing readers to Goldman et al. Although that is a worthy aim, the play itself lacks the dramatic tension necessary to lend cohesion to its snapshots of Goldman's life. The play seems loosely organized around Berkman's incarceration and Goldman's erotic relationships. Because these events happened over several years, the play attempts to cover too much time and, consequently, lacks the dramatic intensity of a shortened time frame.
Still, for anyone who loves and studies Goldman (as I do), this is a must read. It's clear that Zinn fully appreciates the greatness of this much-neglected radical.

Compelling Subject, Wrong Playwright...

So, this play gets four stars...but that's being generous. However, there are no other plays written about the amazing Red Emma, so Howard Zinn gets many, many kudos for writing a play about a person whom the American government and textbook writers would seem to want to forget about. Goldman was an amazing woman--anarchist and feminist, she was a proponent of free love (homo and heterosexual), an avid fighter for workers' rights and women's reproductive rights, and an impassioned speaker. In fact, in her heyday, her speeches would have drawn crowds the likes of Martin Luther King or Barack Obama.

So, thank you, Howard Zinn for resurrecting Emma into play form. But let's be clear: Howard Zinn is not a playwright (although a stunning historian), and this is not a very good play. It's quite didactic, relatively undramatic, and long. Basically, Howard Zinn took a history book and put it into play form, without changing the style.

So, a mixed bag altogether. It's an important play, because there's not really any other play about her, but let's just say, I hope someone writes a better one soon.
