Amazon.com Review
If you haven't seen Hay House's Lifestyles series of gorgeous gift books, there is no better way to acquaint yourself than with publisher/author Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life. A bestseller for many years, You Can Heal Your Life has been republished with bright, beautiful illustrations in full, living color and exquisite typography--each and every page is a work of art by artist Joan Perrin Falquet. The timeless message of the book is that we are each responsible for our own reality and "dis-ease." Hay believes we make ourselves ill by having thoughts of self-hatred. She includes a directory of ailments and emotional causes for each with a corresponding affirmation to help overcome the illness. For example, the probable cause of multiple sclerosis is "mental hardness, hard-heartedness, iron will, and inflexibility." The healing "thought pattern" would be: "By choosing loving, joyous thoughts, I created a loving joyous world. I am safe and free." --P. Randall Cohan

The Single Most Important Book Of My Life
By ERIC FRAIZE
I first came to know this book when I was only 17 years old! That was 27 years ago! I had just left an alcoholic relationship with a 30 year old man (of course, at the time, the age difference didn't dawn on me). I called a friend in desperation and he said to me, "There's a book you need to read. It's called 'You Can Heal Your Life' by Louise Hay." I got the book, read it, and my life has never been the same. It lead me to one miracle after another. It was the pebble that started an avalanche in my life. I can say, with no exaggeration whatsoever, that this was the most important, the most profound book IN MY LIFE. Get it. Work it. Live it. It may be difficult at times. And you may cry a good belly cry from all the crap you release as a result of reading it. But your eyes will be opened and you WILL SEE!

Yes, You Can Heal Your Life
By Sunflower.
This book changed my life. I know you've heard that said about a lot of books and I'm sure there are other fine books out there. But this one,You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay, is the motherbook from which all others evolved. I was introduced to it in 1990, 26 years ago, when I was 42. At the time I was reeling from a pessimistic cancer diagnosis, the end of my marriage, and the development of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I'm almost 69 and this is the book that showed me how to live with and through all that and more. I've given away at least a hundred of these books and this one went to my new friend, Tina, who is excited about the changes in her life she has already made. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Everything but the List
By L. Davis
This is a straight forward, easily read and enacted guide to getting on track in spite of being exposed to criticism. You may not have had the best expreriences, but you don't have to continue the story others fed you.

My only hesitation with recommending this book is the idea of self healing. After a bout with skin cancer medical intervention was required. It looked like a normal pimple and wasn't and another few months could have lead to disaster. Yes, we can have a positive attitude, but there are times when instincts kick in and we need to follow them also.

When English Language Learners Write: Connecting Research to Practice, K-8, by Katharine Davies Samway

Unfair mythologies about English language learners have sprung up in schools around the country. Unsure how to help nonnative speakers write, some teachers and administrators have resorted to deficit-based stereotypes: ELLs can't write They have writing problems They are reluctant writers They need to be taught the skills of writing before writing independently.

In reality, however, ELLs benefit from the same smart, research-based instructional strategies as mainstream student writers, and in When English Language Learners Write, Katharine Davies Samway explores second language writers, shattering myths and in their place offering meaningful insight into powerful instruction.

When English Language Learners Write helps you connect the latest thinking on ELLs and language acquisition to your everyday classroom practices. Samway helps you understand numerous important factors affecting nonnative writers, including:

  • what young children know about print and about the connection between oral and written language
  • how their native language influences the process of learning to write in English
  • how gender, race, ethnicity, and social class affect writing
  • how adult expectations, school-based writing experiences, and participation in bilingual classrooms affect children's development as writers
  • which current developments in writing pedagogy help the most.
Then she shows you crucial steps to take for instruction that's responsive to language learners' needs, such as:
  • understanding the literacy practices of non-mainstream cultures
  • discovering what ELLs can do as writers before they become fluent in English
  • moving from looking at only the writing itself, to investigating writers' processes
  • providing a print-rich environment to cement the reading-writing connection and foster literate behaviors in a new tongue
  • incorporating reflective writing such as logs and dialogue journals to support ELLs' literacy development
  • providing a learner-centered workshop approach to teaching writing.
Not only does Samway provide a window into the latest research as well as practical teaching ideas, she takes you inside the minds and classroom experiences of five ELLs. She documents the ways they think, the products of their learning, and their progress as writers. You'll see firsthand how an instructional focus on what children can do helps nonnative speakers become fluid English writers more quickly than placing them in low-performing groups or falling back on pullout remediation.

Informative and a good read
By B. Sanders
This book includes much information in an easy to read format. The information is presented in the first person and flows well. It does not read like a textbook or a research paper, but does include the knowledge of both.
The information provided in this book is helpful for all teachers of learning writers. While some sections pertain exclusively to English Language Learners, so much of the writing process is applicable to all learners. It is a great resource for teachers of writing.
The reason I only gave it four stars was that I found the book lacking in one area. The book does not have much discussion regarding English Language Learners who do not have an academic background in their home language. The research does show that it is best for students to be able to have strong foundation in their first language and the information will "transfer" to their second language. However, most of the students I have worked with do not have a foundation in their home language. They come to school, in kindergarten, without knowing how to read and write in their home language. Some parents will teach their kids at home, but many will not (they fear that it will hurt their child's chance of doing well in English. And yes, I do tell them that anything they learn in their home language will be of benefit to them. However, parents make the final decision as the school does not teach any other languages except English). It is for these students, learning a new language and learning academics at the same time, which I would love to see more research.

Not what I expected from reading the title and blurb
By candida p.
Not among the list of best books I've read, and there's lots of compact research info, but very little practice connection, so don't really believe the title.

One of the Seminal Novels in English
By mp
Samuel Richardson's massive 1747-8 novel, "Clarissa," is not only the longest novel I've ever read, but one of the best and most complex. Much like Richardson's first novel, "Pamela," "Clarissa" deals with the torments of a virtuous young lady abducted by a rake/libertine (in modern parlance, a rapist) who submits the heroine to a series of trials. Unlike Pamela, a lower class maiden, Clarissa is a member of an established and wealthy family. This change in social situation allows Richardson to explore a host of new issues, with the primary goal of moral didacticism remaining intact between the two.
Clarissa Harlowe, the most beautiful and exemplary of her sex, is being imposed upon by her implacable family to marry one Mr. Solmes, a man of no mean fortune, but whose ethics, especially with regard to his own family, are suspect. Simultaneously, Clarissa's sister, Arabella, has just rejected a proposal from one Robert Lovelace, the heir of a nobleman, educated and refined, but known for his libertinism - his tendency and enjoyment of seducing young women and then abandoning them. Lovelace falls in love, or in lust, with Clarissa, and after he and Clarissa's brother James, heir to the Harlowe fortune, engage in a near fatal duel, Clarissa's continued correspondence with Lovelace becomes a major thorn in the side of the Harlowes' plans for Clarissa. The Harlowes continue to urge the addresses of Mr. Solmes while vilifying Lovelace - Clarissa not approving of either - and when her family's insitence becomes insupportable to Clarissa, the utterly demonic Lovelace takes advantage, whisking her away from a seemingly inevitable union with Solmes. Thus begins an absolutely terrifying journey for Clarissa through the darkness of humanity, as Lovelace plots and executes his seduction of the 'divine' Clarissa.
An epistolary novel, "Clarissa" is written in the form of a series of letters spanning nine months, principally between Clarissa and her best friend and iconoclast, Anna Howe, and between Lovelace and a fellow libertine, John Belford. Richardson's 'to the moment' style of writing gives a minute account of everything that happens to the main characters almost as it happens, giving the novel a highly dramatic sense of urgency. The four major correspondents, as well as others, also give the novel a well-developed sense of perspective, as we get not only the events, but biased opinions and readings of all the other characters, making the events at times difficult to follow, but at the same time, marvelously rich and complex.
Some of the most interesting facets of this novel are its interactions with the law, primarily inheritance law, the contrast between history and story, and at the forefront, the debate over gender roles in marriage. Almost of a piece with the novel's legal issues, Richardson examines the vagueries of semantics - what do words mean? How are words regarded and used differently by men and women? Richardson also confronts the way we read and interpret 'truth' - in a book composed of letters, subjectively written and read, where can we look to for 'truth'?
Among the characters in the novel, by far the most captivating and challenging in "Clarissa" is the aforementioned Anna Howe. The ways she clashes with tradition and propriety throughout the novel are entertaining, and very much reminiscent of the eponymous heroine of Defoe's "Moll Flanders." An amazing and influential novel to say the least, anyone with a few weeks on their hands who is interested in the history of the novel in English should pick up and give "Clarissa" some serious attention, stat!

Read the UNABRIDGED Clarissa!
By A Customer
The UNABRIDGED Clarissa (Penguin ed.) is a powerful, moving eighteenth-century English masterpiece, the first great psychological novel. Its length may seem daunting and it does take at least six weeks to read, but you will be rewarded by finding yourself immersed in the minds of Clarissa and Lovelace. You will feel as though you are living in their world, facing their moral dilemmas, deciding on courses of action, predicting consequences. However, if you accidentally pick up the Sherburn ABRIDGEMENT of Clarissa, you will NOT be able to savor Richardson's famous "writing to the moment." If you doubt me, take a look at Mary Anne Doody and Florian Stuber's article, "Clarissa Censored," in the journal Modern Language Studies (1988). The abridgement is a travesty of Richardson's greatest novel.

Not a book to be read in abridgement--be patient!
By A Customer
Once you've read this book, you can barely read anything written in England post-1750 without finding and feeling Richardson's influence. An English epic, a sometimes infuriatingly detailed exploration of men and women under pressure, a masterfully crafted depiction of bewilderment, betrayal, and the kind of religious ecstasy that's difficult to read. Don't miss Letter 246. Stay with this book, even if it takes you weeks (it took me 7)--it's well worth it, a one-of-a-kind reading experience.

From Poverty to Glory: Growing Up in the Great Depression, by Thomas Sprague Sr

It was the 1930s during the height of the Great Depression and Tom Sprague was just a child growing up in rural Michigan. It was a bittersweet time characterized by breadlines, record unemployment, the rise of fascists regimes, and homeless families. But to this Michigan family the harshness of the era was softened by hunting and fishing, chasing chickens, and playing in the mud. Most importantly, the family learned early that financial poverty could be turned into everlasting gold so long as they stuck together during hard times. In typical Earl Hamner-like fashion, we are reminded of a more innocent time when God, Family, and Country were paramount to life and when any obstacle or trial could be overcome with hard work and dedication. Read the story of one family’s adventures and let yourself be reminded that money is nothing without faith in God and a loving home.

Review
From Poverty to Glory paints a warm picture of a time of familial strength and happiness in the midst of financial hardship. This engaging story of rural children growing up during the great depression takes them through frequently amusing but always compelling adventures where they learn that the love of God, family, and friends buys far more than dollars ever will. Here you ll find life lessons often forgotten but still needed in our fast-paced technological age. --Rex M. Rogers, Former President, Cornerstone University

About the Author
Tom Sprague was reared in rural Barry County, Michigan during the Great Depression of the 1930s. He still lives with his wife of 62 years, on the farm purchased in 1955, just six miles from his birthplace. Tom and his wife attended a one room country school through the eighth grade before going to a consolidated high school. Tom served four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. During his military service and after returning home he attended college. Tom then worked as an Industrial Engineer before starting a full-line sporting goods retail business in 1968. In 1974, Tom was elected to the Who’s Who in Michigan in the field of business and economics. In 1983 he sold his business and retired. Still too young to call it quits, he started a part-time accounting business that soon became full time. He retired again at age 62. Tom then wrote his book from Poverty to Glory. Tom and his wife now spend their leisure time traveling, hunting, and fishing throughout North America.

From hysterically funny to wrenching your heart
By Michael Sprague
A modern Huckleberry Finn is actually a pretty good description. I read this book in pre-published form while it was still circulating among family and friends. It has some of the FUNNIEST stories I've heard. From a sleigh ride turned low-tech launch to farm boys learning NOT to poke skunks with a stick, you'll laugh through one country misadventure to another. But while the book IS entertaining, the subtext is a message of substance.

A great read with a real message. If every lesson this good was this fun, we'd all be wise!

  • About Human, All Too Human by Friedrich Nietzsche Human, All Too Human is a book by 19th-century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The book is Nietzsche's first in the aphoristic style that would come to dominate his writings, discussing a variety of concepts in short paragraphs or sayings. Reflecting an admiration of Voltaire as a free thinker, but also a break in his friendship with composer Richard Wagner two years earlier, Nietzsche dedicated the original 1878 edition of Human, All Too Human “to the memory of Voltaire on the celebration of the anniversary of his death, May 30, 1778.” Unlike his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, which was written in essay style, Human, All Too Human is a collection of aphorisms, a style which he would use in many of his subsequent works. The aphorisms of Human, All Too Human range from a few words to a few pages, but most are short paragraphs. The first installment’s 638 aphorisms are divided into nine sections by subject, and a short poem as an epilogue. The phrase itself appears in Aphorism 35 (originally conceived as the first aphorism) "when Nietzsche observes that maxims about human nature can help in overcoming life's hard moments." Implicit also, is a drive to overcome what is human, all too human through understanding it, through philosophy.

    Seminal Thoughts and Stylistic Honings.
    By M. DeKalb
This is a series of philosophical meanderings by Friedrich Nietzsche, originally published in 1878 (1909 edition), through the psychology of man, the genesis of moral behavior, further building toward Beyond Good And Evil and many other ideas and notions adherent to the philosophy Nietzsche had built just past the turn of the 20th century. In rather succinct fashion Nietzsche states his precepts, in his often dark lofty way and leaves the reader with, if nothing else, a good sense of education. An interesting read, certainly, even if you don't agree with the principals. This is a third of the work as an entirity.

Opening with what the world thinks of his work, toward which his contemporaries are inclined: Nietzsche's work, his philosophy, outlines a world of distrust, and worse - ultra-morality. Our concern then becomes the `free spirit': a contra, a willing assailant on the standard value, an individual who pierces the veil of human nature and is able to live with that insight, that KNOWLEDGE.

Nietzsche opens with an attack upon current metaphysics: The worst systems of knowledge adhere to metaphysical grounds. `The universal, primordial law of the apprehending subject consists in the inner necessity of cognizing every object by itself, as in its essence a thing unto itself' (347) and this followed by the fact that we're very selfish creatures, and there is nothing that has value unless it, in some way, relates to ourselves. And also that our perceptions are encased in this particular time-frame, static, and expecting to remain so which fosters a reliance on the metaphysics, but again, only in that it remains personal.

Pleasure is to be sought and pain to be avoided. This is the base reason why anybody does anything they do, it is perceived (operative word) that this activity, action or behavior works to their favor. The same is true for people who engage criminal activities - the perceived gain is related directly to pleasure. This coincides with Nietzsche's `Will to Power' - doing what is ultimately good for the individual, even if it's a `bad' act, for as we see below, the individual is to remain unaccountable.

There is no such thing as the `free will'. Man is controlled by his heredity and environment, and has no hand in his demeanor, behavior or reactions. This comes into more prominent play with elaboration on the section regarding the History of Moral Feelings (575), in which Nietzsche again argues that because `good' and `bad' are ambiguous terms, an individual can't really but be blamed for anything other than a lack of knowledge which has thwarted the expansion of his mental horizons and faculties, thus limiting his rational capacity. And consequently all moral strivings should proceed, rather, toward wisdom than `good' and `bad' feeling.

Morality is discussed in its phases. First is the transition from conduct which is immediately gratifying to that which is delayed based upon permanent usefulness. Secondly, a life is to be led upon principles. And lastly the individual decides for himself what is `honorable and what is useful' (974) Morality is dictated to us by / from either stronger persons, or stronger entities - one of Nietzsche's more formidable opponents: `the state'. From this point we must refer to the previous comments regarding unjust perceptions, options, notions and the need to become wiser as it regards the labeling of individual experiences.

Dream psychology: The mind trying to reason, rationalize, the physical sensations the body endures while the sleeper sleeps. The major causes of bizarre dreams are that an `inadequacy of distinction' and an `error of comparison' are the probable reasons of dream nature. The memory is very fallible and becomes even more so when pseudo-conscious.

Tying all of this together is the idea that being unjust is a fundamental error in human interaction / observation. This because anything under observation, is so observed, incompletely and thereby the summation of analysis is inaccurate. `All estimates are summary and must be so.' (521)

The final segment of the work contains Nietzsche's thoughts upon Religion. He proceeds through the fallacy in Christian living, morals, asceticism and offers his view points regarding the origins and ends of these tenents. Nietzsche attacks religious scruples, the priests perpetuating the religion, and the nature of the religion of the weak, abased creatures who consider themselves pious to a cause. This is what amounts to the preliminary arguments for `The Anti-Christ'.

    Quotes:

`The most usual erroneous conclusions of men are these: a thing exists, therefore it is right... So also: an opinion gives happiness...' (501)

`We are primordially illogical and hence unjust beings and can recognize this fact' (527)

`everything outside of the personal has no existence for them or at the utmost is observed as but a faint shadow. Consequently the value of life for the generality of mankind consists simply in the fact that the individual attaches more importance to himself than he does to the world.' (540)

`No one is responsible for his acts, no one for his nature; to judge is tantamount to being unjust. This applies as well when the individual judges himself.' (671)

`The shortness of human life leads to many erroneous assertions concerning the qualities of man.' (680)

`The calling of almost every man, even of the artist, begins with hypocrisy, with an imitation of deportment, with a copying of the effective in manner.' (766)

`things we cannot accomplish ourselves, we are apt to criticize unfairly.' (795)

`Whoever promises somebody to love him always, or to hate him always, or to be ever true to him, promises something that it is out of his power to bestow.' (820)

`For this purpose he bestowed hope upon man: it is, in truth, the greatest of evils for it lengthens the ordeal of man.' (881)

`Without pleasure, there is no life; the struggle for pleasure is the struggle for life.' (1109)

`Forbidden Generosity - There is not enough of love and goodness in the world to throw any of it away on conceited people. (1355)

    Philosopher Cum Laude
    By Frank Granata
Definitely a thinking person... He and Voltaire will never be booked to play "The Vatican", where thinking, unless on a church mission, was/is a punishable pagan act as described by St. Bernardi of Clairveaux in the 12th Century.

Churches admonish their followers using the same approach as athletic coaches who have styled their own "can't-miss-systems"... Their cry being, "do-as-I-say", translates to:

"DON'T THINK, YOU'LL WEAKEN THE TEAM!"

    A Sometimes Overlooked Gem
    By Reader From Aurora
The following review pertains to the Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy edition of Friedrich Nietzsche's `Human all too Human' edited by Schacht and translated by Hollingdale. The current text is compilation of three texts, `Human all too Human' (1878), `Assorted Opinions & Maxims' (1879) and `The Wanderer & His Shadow' (1880 ). These texts were rereleased 1886 as a 2-volume set with new prefaces. As with the majority of Nietzsche's work these texts received little recognition during the author's lifetime.

First, kudos to Cambridge University Press for its the Texts in the History of Philosophy series with its objective of increasing access to important but lesser known philosophical works. This series promises to be an excellent resource for students of philosophy. This edition of Human all too Human is a helpful and accessible compilation of some of Nietzsche's lesser known writings. While translation is always a challenging and often a contentious issue, Hollingdale appears to have achieved an appropriate mix of readability and literalness - he is effective in maintaining the poetic feel of Nietzsche's prose. One minor criticism of this edition is the small font, while probably necessary to keep the text to a single volume; it can make reading less comfortable.

With regard to the work itself, Human all too Human is often seen by scholars as a transitional work in Nietzsche thought. And, has tended to be overlooked in English for reasons of accessibility (limited translations) and perception (not seen to add to his latter corpus). For example, Walter Kaufman the great post WWII popularizer of Nietzsche did not choose to translate these texts.

While clearly the themes evidenced in Human all too Human are further developed in Nietzsche's later work, I believe the text has its own inherent value. Though somewhat more nuanced and less polemical than his more mature work, it provides wonderful insight into his views on a plethora of subjects, religion, art, epistemology, psychology, sociology and culture. It is also a treasure trove of ideas that are further developed by subsequent thinkers such Freud, Jung and Heidegger etc. Overall, it is a brilliant, insightful and wide-ranging text - highly recommended for all students of modern philosophy.
