The definitive tome on the Bauhaus and a work of art in itself

The Bauhaus was the defining birthplace of modernism, and one that continues to influence artistic and aesthetic direction today.

This volume is comprehensive, and is in itselt, as an object that reflects Bauhaus sensibility - a reflection of the movement.

I have been seeking a copy off an on for over 30 years but they are hard to come by - I have only seen one or two (hardcover) ones for sale in that time. The copy I have purchased is second hand but in fine condition - including the beautifully articulated slipcase.

One of the great beneifts of the internet, and in particular, when it comes to books, is Amazon's (and a few other websites) functionality in bringing together buyers and sellers for out of print, and relatively rare books, still at affordable prices.

I purchased my copy from the US and had it delivered to Australia, for a third of the cover price the book was, 30 years ago.

Even ignoring inflacon, this is surely a bargain.

Please note that my comments refer to the hardcover version only, The later produced softcover, is just a book, in comparison.

A timeless classic it enjoys pride of place in my personal library.

A great deal of information, focused on individuals and their contributions to the Bauhaus. ALL pages are in black and white, which is always a great disappointment when reading about art, design or architecture. Considering this production shortcoming, the book is overpriced. Its written content, very useful and thorough.

American men from Macon County, Alabama, for a study of "the effects of untreated syphilis in the Negro male." For the next 40 years—even after the development of penicillin, the cure for syphilis—these men were denied medical care for this potentially fatal disease. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study was exposed in 1972, and in 1975 the government settled a lawsuit but stopped short of admitting wrongdoing. In 1997, President Bill Clinton welcomed five of the Study survivors to the White House and, on behalf of the nation, officially apologized for an experiment he described as wrongful and racist. In this book, the attorney for the men describes the background of the Study, the investigation and the lawsuit, the events leading up to the Presidential apology, and the ongoing efforts to see that out of this painful and tragic episode of American history comes lasting good.

40 Years of Medical Injustice

I'd only heard of this grave injustice sometime when the movie Miss Evers' Boys was released. I never saw the movie and never really considered reading about the issue. To me it was just one more iniquity in a long line of iniquities perpetrated by the U.S. upon African Americans. It was only recently that it was brought up in a book I was reading that I decided to read about the matter.

As far as credibility, The Tuskegee Syphilis Study is probably the most credible book on the topic as it was written by the lawyer representing the participants. Fred Gray had the fortune (or misfortune) of pouring over thousands of documents spanning 40 years in order to assemble a case against the United States of America. In doing so he became intimately familiar with the egregious wrong that was done to the African American men that were tricked into participating in this study.

The book is very concise at 120 pages and covers all of the pertinent information. For me, it cleared up some misconceptions I had such as the participants being given syphilis and the factual accuracy of the movie Miss Evers' Boys.

Being that the author was so central to the case we get much biographical information about him as well. At times I wasn't sure if it was to establish his credibility or brag about his achievements. It didn't detract from the crux of the book but it was noticeable. Still it was a good and necessary book for America's post Civil War history.

No-one else than Fred D. Gray could have done justice to telling this true story which is the most shocking example of racial discrimination in American history. Gray has a very concise manner of thinking and that shows through in this book. He tells the story in a manner that's very respectful to the victims of the "Study"

About the Author
Stephen Heidari-Robinson led McKinsey & Company’s Organization Practice for energy clients in addition to developing the firm’s thinking on implementing reorganizations. He served as UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s advisor on energy and environment. Stephen has also worked as a vice president at Schlumberger, as head of the corporate program of a charity (Asia House), and in the UK Ministry of Defence.

Suzanne Heywood is Managing Director, Exor Group; sits on the boards of a number of companies, including The Economist Group and CNH Industrial; and is Deputy Chair of the Royal Opera House. She started her career in the UK Treasury and then worked at McKinsey & Company, where for several years she led the global Organization Design service line in the firm’s Organization Practice.

How to unlock latent value, especially in a rapidly changing competitive environment

I recall reading somewhere that the TI-class supertanker ships must travel more than miles in order to reverse direction. Their engines are off before traveling the last 15 miles to dock. I thought about these and other issues as I began to read this book. They give us at least some sense of how difficult it must be for the world’s largest organizations to complete a reorganization.

However, the fact remains that there are valuable lessons to be learned from previous reorgs and that is worth noting. Stephen Heidari-Robinson and Suzanne Heywood point out, “A successful reorg can be one of the best ways for companies to unlock latent value, especially in a changing business environment – which is why companies are doing reorgs more often.”

They provide an abundance of information, insights, and counsel that will help leaders in almost organization to get its reorg right. They recommend – and thoroughly explain -- a five-step process by which to achieve that objective

1. Construct the reorg’s P&L
2. Understand the given organization’s current weaknesses and strengths
3. Choose very carefully from multiple options
4. Get the “plumbing and wiring” right
5. Launch, learn, and (if necessary) course-correct

I agree with them: “Have a good business rationale for your reorg. Focus on delivery as much as — or more than — the design itself. Recognize that there will be issues along the way; learn from previous reorg mistakes in your own organization and from the experience of others [some of which is cited in this book]. Accelerate the process to minimize the upset for your colleagues and to deliver the business results you need as soon as possible. And finally, step up to the plate: lead your own reorg. Don’t outsource to others.”

I presume to add one addition suggestion. Over the years, I have been centrally involved in a number of reorgs of varying nature and scale. However different they were in most respects, one of the most important issues that all of their leaders had to address, when obtaining buy-in within the given workplace, was to be well-prepared to answer a question they probably wouldn’t be asked but a question nonetheless that all the employees were asking themselves: “What’s in it for me?”

Heidari-Robinson and Heywood make brilliant use of several reader-friendly devices, notably “Pitfall” and “Winning Ways” sections in most chapters, accompanied by dozens of Figures, Tables, Q&A quizzes, “drafts” of content documentation, checklists, 3-D option analysis, and a recurring “How to Handle Communications in Step [fill the step]” and “How to Use These Ideas” sections. These devices will facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of key material later.

Presumably Stephen Heidari-Robinson and Suzanne Heywood agree with me that it would be a fool’s errand to attempt to apply all of the recommendations they offer for consideration. It remains for thoughtful and reflective readers to sort through the material with appropriate care, then select whatever is most relevant to their organization’s immediate and imminent needs, interests, resources, and strategic objectives. Elimination or at least substantial reduction of waste is surely one of those objectives as are simplification of processes, improvement of decision-making and problem-solving processes, and — in process — to “ unlock latent value, especially in a changing business environment.”

This book is a brilliant achievement. Bravo!

I've noticed immediate changes!!! Finally Gotten rid of excess fluid retention!

I have just started trying this method of eating (although I eat mostly paleo so most of the foods I sub out for veggies) for a couple of days and here are the three changes I noticed 1. I don't have a dry mouth when I wake up in the morning!! 2. I'm not bloated anymore, I appear thinner even though I haven't lost weight and 3. I'm loosing about one pound of fluid retention each day!! That is great because my regual weight is around 115, but I ate out a few times in a row and in a couple of days I was up to 225 (not fat, just fluid retained because my body was super stressed out!)I have been trying to get my weight down FOR A MONTH by cutting more and more foods from my diet. That wasn't the problem, it was how I was eating, so good to know.

That being said, I don't think I'm going to give up coffee like recomended. I'm a barista and I work with one of the best coffee companies in the North West (Stumptown, I love you) I really don't believe that drinking an 8 oz americano a couple times a week will enduce chronic disease :) I'm learning that a huge part of chronic disease is not only how you eat, but also how you stress yourself mentally.

For people who have hypochondirac tendicies, like myself, I also recomend the book, "The Holographic Universe" by Michael Talbot and flip to pg 82. Very interesting research.

If you are into nutrition, you will love this book.
I am in a nutritional field and this helped me understand why some people don't get as good of results as others. So I have been able to recommend this book, which allows people to see that their food choices totally affect EVERYTHING.
By the way, I have read probably twenty books or more on food/nutrition and this one is the most in-depth and goes to the SOURCE of the issue, our digestive health. It is easy to understand and then implement his strategies for healing the gut.

She has redefined what it means for women to be rock performers and blazed trails for many other popular female musicians to follow after her.
